A7N8X runs in single channel mode after Bios u/g

Chris Bradley

I've got an A7N8X-dx with a single stick of 512Mb Corsair 333 DDR in the
black RAM slot. It runs with an XP 2400. I've just updated the bios from
1.03 to 1.06 and now the system posts with the message "memory at 200mhz,
Single channel mode".

No matter what I try I can't get rid of the "single channel mode" message &
get back to dual channel.

Any ideas?

You need two separate sticks of RAM for dual channel, one in each
channel. The first channel is the black slots and the second is the blue
slots. See one of Ben Popes posts for his website.

Sorry but you never had dual channel. You need more than one memory stick
for that.

You never had Dual CH mode to begin with. ;p

See mobo manual,...
To utilize dual channel memory feature install the DIMMs in any of the
following sequence: sockets 1&3, sockets 2&3 or sockets 1,2&3.

Just so that I don't feel left out :p

You always had Single Channel, but the BIOS didn't use to report the fact.
Newer BIOSs tell you Single or Dual (perhaps since 1005 or so)

When does the BIOS report this? I don't recall ever seeing any message, one
way or the other, on either 1005 or 1007. Maybe I'm not paying enough
attention during boot. Is there a diagnostic to report the mode after
bootup?

Yeah, try the nVidia System Utility for some info. I also find aida32 to be
pretty comprehensive.

The very first thing that will appear during boot.
Some monitor don't turn on fast enough to see it from a cool boot so
maybe you've been missing it.

Well, I rebooted a bunch of times and first thing to appear is the ASUS Bios
splash screen with no memory diagnostic earlier. Maybe I have to disable
the splash screen. I'm also on a LCD so perhaps it is taking a second or
two to decide how to sync to the signal and I'm missing it. Thanks,
