I installed asus probe and it said my PS fans were not working ! I
chedcked and they were. They were connected to a fan connector via a
blue and black plug right next to another fan connector that was
working . I switched them to see if i could get Probe to see PS fan
speed But when I did something happened and now both fan connectors off
the MB do not work . Did I screw em up bad or is there something i can
do? I canot get any fan i plug into either of those 2 fan connectors on
MB to work

I checked my Antec Truepower PDF manual, and it has a three pin
connector on the end of two wires. A blue wire and a black wire.

x blue = tachometer_output Typical power supply
x (no wire) fan monitor cable -
x black = ground two wires, three hole
connector.

You were probably fooling around with the plug from the power
supply, while the computer was running. You touched the
black wire from the connector above, to the +12V center pin
of the motherboard header. The motherboard header looks like
this, compared to the connector on the power supply:

x tachometer_input Typical motherboard fan header.
x +12V fan power Three pin header with plastic tab
x ground to prevent reverse insertion.

If you have indeed connected the black wire (ground) of the
fan monitor cable, to the center pin (+12V) of the motherboard
connector, that will burn out the track in the motherboard that
carries current to the header.

To fix this is simple. Buy an adapter, that adapts a disk drive
power connector, into fan power. Here is an example from Newegg.
There are two adapters in this package. There isn't a second
disk drive connector on these adapters, so you cannot daisy chain
them. You can use some disk drive "Y" cables, to make more disk
drive power outlets ("Y" cables used to be available at Radio
Shack).

This is how you use the adapter.

tachometer_signal
Disk Drive +----------+
Power Connector | |
+--- X |
X +12V -------------------- X | <---- male three pin
X Ground ---------+------- X | header (goes to
X Ground | | the fan)
X +5V | +-----------+
| |
| +---- X
| X <---- female three hole
+------- X connector (goes to
motherboard)

A word of advice (I hope I'm not misinterpreting what has happened,
but anyway...) - don't play with the stuff inside the computer
while the power is on. If you are changing any components or wiring,
always shut down the computer, and unplug it from the wall. The
power supply can produce 20-30 amps on several of its outputs, and
that is enough current to melt something or start a fire. If you
accidently touch a component to the wrong power outlet, even for
an instant, you could fry the component so it will never work again.

The fan header has a plastic tab, and the fan cable should only easily
go onto the header one way. If you found you needed a lot of force
to install it, chances are you were putting it on the wrong way.
If you had been installing the cable with the power off, there would
have been a chance to discover your mistake, before turning on the
power again. If you insist on connecting stuff to the computer
with the power on, there is absolutely no room for mistakes,
and that is just poor betting odds. Always work with the power off.

Hope that helps,
Paul
