Allan Wong

Windows XP Pro SP-2 system with Outlook Express configured for 2 email
account: a pop3 server account and a hotmail account. I read all of messages
everyday but then today something strange is encountered. Under my user name
on the windows welcome logon screen, it keeps on telling me that I have 2
unread messages, but actually there is nothing. The following steps had been
done:
1.Reboot and logon again and again just couldn't resolve the problem.

2.Further doing by cleared up all the files in this directory didn't solve
the problem either.
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{A95139D4-BEC0-4075-9270-43DC43941921}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express.

3.Tried to reinstall IE by changing the value data from 1 to 0 using this
registry key but it didn't go as windows says the system has a newer version
than the one which is installing:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Can't come up with any other idea. Can someone please give a hand on this?
Thanks

Hi Allen,

It depends on where it is stemming from:

Passport:

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Advanced/Manage
Passwords/Remove.

Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)

To remove an account or to change the count manually Go to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.
