By "read" do you mean look at the typeface to see what it looks like before
you install it? On my system the program ACDSee is the default for looking
at uninstalled fonts but if you don't have something similar you may want
to search for a free utility to do the job. One example would be AMP Font
Viewer http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/ I have not used it but it has been
around for a long time so I expect that it is safe and usable.

John,

I have ACDsee v. 3.1, which is a freebie that came with a camera or another
program -- but how do you get it to view fonts? I don't even see a Text
tool.

Thanks,
Jack

I don't know if a version that old has the font viewing capability. I'm
using ACDSee 9. But the way to do it is to right-click on the font file and
then Open With and select ACDsee. If your version has the ability then it
will open a small sample of the font from the file.

John,

Thanks, but just discovered I can double-click any uninstalled font and
Windows Font Viewer will open it.

However, what I really would like is a way to see a bunch of fonts without
having to open each one at a time. I've got over a thousand fonts and would
like to peruse them once in a while to pick out one for the occasion.

Why not just install them all and then you won't have to fiddle around.
(If there is some performance issue that you are trying to avoid, that
was in the DOS versions of Window not the NT ones)

Bob,

Yes, thanks -- but installing
1) will still not (apparently) give me a way to see a bunch of fonts without
having to open each one at a time.
2) will be more clutter in the Installed Fonts than I want.
3) will perhaps take up approx 1 GB of space, and I don't have but 8 GB of
free space on the C Drive, so I'd rather keep them on a separate drive. Of
course, at some point I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a larger
HD. Still, # 1 & # 2 above are the main issues.

I guess I'll check out http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/ as John suggested.

John,

The AMP Font Viewer works great! Thanks!
