it is a bug with microsofts web based newsreader. it sometimes says that it
was "unable to process your request", even though the post went through.

Kenny-
You are right about one thing, most people don't have a clue what they
got themselves into, it's easy to forget that BETA is for testing purposes
and not a final product, but for the majority of people it's the idea of a
new OPSYS for free. The blame shouldn't go to microsoft anyways. They are
doing their jobs, just as we are doing ours.

You guys have given some great solutions in these postings, hats off to you
all. :)

Good point..better safe than sorry I guess :)

Call it paranoia. Vista is still Beta and that means the Boot Manager and
installer are still Beta. I would rather no beta software came anywhere
near my production environment. So I turn my production Hard Drive off in
the BIOS and there is no way that Vista can touch it. :)

I don't even dual-boot on my production machine. I bought a 64-bit machine
for testing and keep everything Vista away from my work machine. I do use
the work machine as a helper (downloads and dvd burning and such when
needed).

Oh boy! Wish I had know about this before. I have XP and Vista on two
seperate drives, no dual boot though, I have to physicaly switch cables. Can
remnants of one system be left in the cables and migrate to the other OS and
produce. . . . . what?
Worse still! I have a Linux box sitting right next to the ViXPa and there's
a

a

it's

…ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

I'm going to get it on my next computer. I did the upgrade and have had
minimal problems. I did do the homework first and read through a lot of the
forums before I started, also, I made an image of my computer before I
started the upgrade, so if I need to I can just back up my documents again
and then restore the image.

So far I really like Vista.

If everyone who installed Vista had spent a week reading this news group,
and the Microsoft web site before either doing a clean install or upgrading
XP, I'll bet this forum would have 10% of the postings. Maybe less than
that.

Those like Richard who did the homework may still have problems with Vista,
although I don't think most of us do, but at least we know how we are going
to get back to our previous operating systems, and we aren't going to lose
our data.

What should we do if we allready made this mistake, and installed Vista Beta
2 x86 over my factory purchased, XP OS? Is my only option going out an
purchasing Windows XP Pro, or Home Edition? Because i really dont think thats
cool, i wish they would have put a warning more clearly for the download,
like just state its a beta program and all its arisk to download if you dont
intend on keeping perminant, I also need to save all my info, but just go
back to my XP OS System. PLEASE I REALLY NEED HELP?

Please read the red-letter text on GetReady (same page and just above the
download and order the dvd links):

From http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

"Note: This is beta code and should not be used in a production environment
or on a main machine in the home. Beta 2 is intended for developers, IT
professionals and technology experts to continue or begin their testing of
Windows Vista. Before you decide to use Beta 2, you should feel comfortable
with installing operating systems, updating drivers, and general PC
troubleshooting. Some risks of using beta operating systems include hardware
and software incompatibility and system instability. If you have concerns
about installing this beta software on your computer, we encourage you to
obtain the final release version of Windows Vista when it is available in
2007."

On the system requirements page it also says:

"In addition, once you install Windows Vista Beta 2 (or RC1) you cannot roll
back to the previous operating system installation-you will either have to
acquire and install the final released edition of Windows Vista or reinstall
a previous edition of Windows. Before installing Windows Vista Beta 2 on any
computer, please remember to back up all your files."

Use your computer's recovery system to restore the system to its factory
state. This will be either recovery cd's or a function key at startup to
begin recovery from a hidden recovery partition on your hard disk. Consult
you computer's manufacturer for instructions.

If you had actually read the whole page where you went to sign up, you would
have seen the warning notices there quite clearly.

The only way to get back to XP is a total format and reinstall. You should
have received either recovery cds or a hidden system recovery partition on
your 'factory purchased' computer, along with the instructions on restoring
your system.

So if I install Vista and everything goes wrong and I encounter a lot of
problems, I shouldn't have any problem AT ALL popping in my Recovery CD and
installing XP again?

C

Colin Barnhorst

No one can guarantee such a thing but the computer's manufacturer. The
chances of that are slim and none (and Slim left town).

Some posters have reported that the Vista bootloader overwrites the code in
the MBR that enables the key they use during boot to start the recovery
process on their machines. I have heard of some who had to contact the
computer's manufacturer for a fix to repair the MBR. Those cases were
mostly ones where the recovery process involved a hidden recovery partition.

In any case be sure that the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in
your BIOS settings before trying to use the recovery cd.

Test the recovery cd NOW to make sure that it boots the computer.
