A virus penetrated Live OneCare and now I can't update to SP2

Somehow two Trojan viruses got through and I was "fully" protected by Windows
Live OneCare. I ended up doing a system restore, but the computer would not
update to SP2. You need SP2 to use Live OneCare and in the meantime I am
paying for protection I do not have. It tells me when it goes into the
installations process that it cannot read from the database. That is all is
says. Can someone help?

To be clear, you used System Restore or you did a Repair Installation ?

For the " cannot read from the database" message, please see:

http://winhlp.com/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Scroll down to the " Cryptographic service and related errors " heading:
Some of the possible error messages are:

* Cryptographic service error
* Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from or write to the database

Follow the steps laid out there.

Thank you Mow...

I did do a complete restore--back to having to re-install programs etc. I
did got to the link and was able to further downloard the SP2 to my computer.
I then put it on CD (Plus I ordered a CD which was free, except for the
shipping) and then I could install the SP2. Now I can't seem to get Live
OneCare up and going again, it gives me an Error ID of 0033-800-70643. I will
keep after it...this has been a very long process!

Thanks again!

Thanks again!

Since my subscriptioin was new, I was able to call the support line (866)
663-2273 (free support because my subscritpion was new) and after three hours
(!) and they took control of my computer from their program (you have to
authorize them to do this by the way) the technician found my framework was
corrupt, so he un- and re-installed things and I now have things working
again. This was a horrible incident and really gave me doubts about the Live
OneCare product. They rebated a one-month subscription to me ($4.71) which
really seemed low considering I had lost everything that I had, not to
mention three weeks of frustration, and phone-holding time, but I will give
it a try again and if it does not work, I'll be back!

Once again, you're mowst welcome. Was Live OneCare or another AV
monitoring the system when the .NET Framework was first installed ? AVs
can cause a damaged or incomplete installation issue when installing a
..NET, Service Pack, or a security update for a .NET Framework.
Also, using System Restore *may* cause corruption issues with .NET
Frameworks if an update or SP for said Framework was installed after the
restore points date. Again, this is apparently related to AVs or other
security software not allowing files to be reverted to their correct
versions.
