Hello all,
Who can help me with the following:

I had to install a new copy of Windows XP Pro I installed it in the
directory Windows 2. The old copy I renamed to Window_s. I could not
restore the old copy because the restore points were gone. How can I
restore settings from the old copy?? -. P.e.:

Where are the settings store for the desktop (the shortcuts and view
properties).

How can I copy the Start menu settings from the new version to the old
version?

I am the Administrator and the only user of the PC

I would like your help please.
Gr. Carley.

Hello all,
Who can help me with the following:

I had to install a new copy of Windows XP Pro I installed it in the
directory Windows 2.

Bad idea in just about every circumstance, even if Microsoft Knowledge
Base articles do suggest it.

The old copy I renamed to Window_s. I could not
restore the old copy because the restore points were gone. How can I
restore settings from the old copy?? -. P.e.:

If the System Restore data for the previous install was corrupted then
that is the end of the line for that data. The only option is to
clear out the System Restore data and start fresh, usually by turning
off System Restore, rebooting the computer, and turning System Restore
back on again.

Where are the settings store for the desktop (the shortcuts and view
properties).

View properties are in the Registry. Desktop shortcuts would be in
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Desktop and also in C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Desktop

View settings are in the registry. The new install created its own
registry so they will probably have to be redone.

How can I copy the Start menu settings from the new version to the old
version?
Look in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Start Menu and also in
I am the Administrator and the only user of the PC

Hopefully when you look in the Documents and Settings folders you will
find subfolders for both your old and new user names.

However you should be aware that just recovering the Start Menu
shortcuts will not make the applications from the previous install
also usable with the new install. Most if not all of them will have
to be reinstalled so as to create the proper registry entries for that
application and also to put some files needed by that application into
the ....\System32 folder and possibly other folders as well.

Good luck
