Has anybody noticed lately an unusual number of people in these groups
reporting system problems described variously as hanging, locking up,
freezing up, going dead, etc.? In the last month or two ...

My system uses ADSL with a USB modem and, once a day, it hangs for up to 5
minutes after connecting. Every cure suggested has been tried, according
to Adaware, Microsoft's new Spyware tool and umpteen other virus and spyware
hunters the computer is clean. Mystery continues.

Get rid of your USB modem and get a proper modem/router that
connects via cat5e ethernet.

I will be next month anyway. I wondered if that might cure it as well.

Increased adoption of higher-powered systems?
The higher powered video cards and CPUs have been out for
awhile, but that doesn't necessarily mean everyone ran out
and bought one at that point.

The same thought crossed my mind ...

I don't know about this group, but I'm losing hard drives
all over the place ... 5 in one lab last week, and a
brand new 160 gig SATA yesterday ... all Maxtor !!!!
I ran chkdsk on 10 others, and all of them reported
bad spots, but seemed to recover. Those were 40 gigers
about 2 years old with one year warrantees. Word
around the web is Maxtor has really cheapened their
product.

No. It's been going on as long as PC's have been around.

You may have a good point there....

In past years it was easy to put it off on Windows (9x), and
yet within it's limitations, win9x is NOT nearly as instable
as some would have you believe, when paired with modern
apps, drivers, and an otherwise stable system. 'Tis not to
suggest everyone step backwards though, what fun would that
be?

True.

And a fair amount of the increased 'stability' in the NT derivatives are
measures to prevent the user from screwing it up which, IMO, was the source
of many Win9x problems.

allot of this comes from a couple of very old ideas and new higher power
demanding systems.

old idea #1 'Bang for the buck" taken to the extreme. Buying cheap cases
w/PSU's is no longer a great savings. CPU / mainboard combos with the worst
boards possible is another.

#2 buying into State-o-the-art equipment and being the guinea pig (but
then where would WE be without YOU?)

Hardly the only two reasons, but from this old duffers perspective, these
seem to be the two that stand out.

My mystery was solved by switching back to cable from DSL.
