I have a 70 year old friend who just got his first computer. He
doesn't know how to do anything. Does anybody know a good book for a
rank beginner?

I thought the "Windows Vista - The Missing Manual - Starters" by David
Pogue was a pretty good book for a beginner.

There are several do it by pictures type of hand holding books that
are out there and can be found at Internet sites like Amazon or in
larger computer stores or book stores.

"Windows Vista Plain and Simple" is one, "Teach yourself visually..."
a series of picture type books on a variety of topics is another and
"Microsoft Windows Vista simplified" also is aimed at beginners.

The one I'm waiting for from O'Reilly is called "Windows Vista
Annoyances: Tips, Secrets, and Hacks", but it isn't scheduled to come
out until late fall, pushed back from late summer. Almost anything
from this publisher is well research, well written, but lacking and
included CD and has few pictures, just meat and potatoes kind of book,
of which I have about a dozen already. ;-)
