Am I suppose to use a whole bunch of floppy disks to backup my system state
and other stuff when I open the backup utility? Or can I back it up on
something else like a CD? Is backing up the computer registry necessary? What
is the recommended writing speed for recording on a CD-R, to avoid buffer
underrun?

Windows will not do a backup to a CD. You will have to backup to a hardd
rive then copy everyhting to a CD.

You could do a Google search on backup and see if there is other software
out there will will allow a backup to a CD and/or DVD.

Jerry i would suggest Norton Ghost 9 as this wiull back up and compress your
hard drive into files that can be spanned across cd's or to a dvd (depending
on the amount of data you have) i have mine set to back up my pc every week
automatic!

Also yes back up the registry as virus's can edit and damage your reg, which
may be the only thing you need to fix!

Next recording speeds and buffer under-run depend on your burner's cache and
how fast your burning and from what source such as direct cd to cd or HD- CD
i's suggest a 32x tho im quite happy at 48x and 52X for dvd-R x1 and +r 4x

hope thats of some help.

NTBackup is essentially a tape oriented program. You can only use CD at
all by installing one of the Packet Writing programs for CD-RW (eg In
CD) and at that it will not 'span' multiple disks.

The registry is backed up for day to day purposes as part of the days
restore point. If you aim to make a total backup from which the system
can be restored to a clean disk, the registry would need to be included

I couldn't afford Norton Ghost 9.0 so I searched Google. I found a site that
has a Genie Backup Manager Home Edition Version 5.0 download but I came here
to ask whether it's the right thing to use for what I'm looking for. There's
a 30-day free trial. It costs about $45 I think to buy it. But what happens
after 30 days?

I Have been using this Progran Since it WAS called SEAGATE BACKUP ,(
1995) Then it Was Sold To Veritas (1999) , Now Stomp Has it..

Try The Trial version on the right of this url.. It Has Never Failed me..
Backs up to Cd-r Cd-rw DVD DVD-rw And you can mix or Match The Media,

http://www.stompsoft.com/bump_upgrade.html
I tried GHOST, I Tried DiskIMAGE , But none of Those are even Close

Just for curiosity if the trial version is expired will I be able to use it
again after I reinstall it?

Typically not, because it leaves a timestamp behind referencing the same program installation.

I would think that if you used said program for the whole of the trial, you would knnow whether or not you liked it enough to purchase it.
