A short bold black line appears when I open a blank document. It is under
the line I am typing and keeps moving down a line as I type. Very annoying.
How do I get rid of it?

You are working in Normal view (or if you have Word 2007 it's called
Draft view), or possibly in Outline view. That black line indicates
the end of the document, and there's no way to get rid of it in those
views. Switch to Print Layout view by clicking the appropriate button
in the bottom of the window (or the menu item View > Print Layout) and
there won't be any line.

You are in Normal view, and this is the end-of-document marker. You won't
see it in Print Layout view.
