98SE, 9800Pro, JK: Academy & COD: problem solved

W

Wblane

Thanks to the Rage3d forums. I kept Catalyst 4.3 but replaced the
ATIo9xxx.dll file w/the Catalyst 3.8 version. Now COD and Jedi Knight Academy
work. I wish there was a place that had all the ATIo9xxx.dll files for all the
Catalyst version somewhere.

I have one more thing to add w/regards to ATI's decision to not support Windows
ME/98: **** YOU ATI!

lol, MS doesn't support 98 anymore ME will be unsupported soon, why should
ATI support it?
If they support those then why not Win 3.11, or very version of DOS ever
written?

If I were to look on the box of any recently sold Radeon card (or any
currently sold Ati card), it will say something along the lines of
"Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows
XP."

That's on the box of an Ati 9600Pro I'm looking at now. Admittedly,
it's a Sapphire card; we can't get Built by cards here in the UK, but
I wouldn't mind betting it says something pretty similar on Built by
card boxes that you can walk into a shop and buy today.

Ati and its associated partner companies have sold those cards as
including support for W98SE and ME, and they should keep to that
undertaking.

I suspect some serious brownnosing to Billy Goates here, possibly as a
concomitant of all the brief but absorbing (not!) threads I see here
about Ati's involvement with Eggs Box. King Billy wants us to be
perpetually tied to the latest OS and complete control for M$.

Win 3.x and DOS were unsupported before any Radeon card was issued
(we're talking Catalyst drivers here, so that obviously means Radeon
cards) and Ati has never sold any of those cards by describing them as
supported under Win 3.x or DOS. On the other hand, if you look on
Ati's driver site, you will see that many older cards are not
supported under W2K or XP: surely, if Ati are to take the attitude
that they will only support current OSs, they should issue drivers and
software for these cards that support W2K and XP?

Gee, MS wants everyone to buy and use their latest product - who would have
thunk it?

The card still works under those OSes, and at the time of printing, and
release those OSes were current.
I doubt many older cards would support newer functions of DX9 etc.., but you
are confusing the two issues of OS support and hardware support.
Also just because ATI released drivers for one OS over another that may just
mean those particular OSes needed a tweak but the older ones didn't.
It was a bit of a scare mongering by the original poster, without any real
evidence.

No, the OP didn't say anything about older cards not being supported
under the newest OSs - I did, simply to illustrate the inconsistency
of Ati's attitude.

The point is that it appears Ati have decided to discontinue producing
Catalyst drivers (and MMC software) for W9.x and ME. Considering
that, as I pointed out, these OSs are still described as supported by
Ati on the boxes of current cards and are still widely used, I think
it is, to say the least, shabby of Ati to do this, and also a little
stupid - obviously the bulk of their sales now will be to W2K and XP
users, but users of older OSs must still constitute a significant
section of the market.

Duh, any card which supports the VGA standard supports DOS.
If they support those then why not Win 3.11, or very version of DOS ever
written?

A much more cogent post than my original. Although I'm still not happy about
ATI's decision.

Thanks, Bill - I'm no happier than you are! I think Ati are probably
trying to work their corporate nose as far up Billy Goates'
you-know-what as they can.
