9800xt Cooling

Dion L Heap

Running a 9800xt in my box (P4 3.02 o/c to 3.5 gig, 2 x 512 corsair xms3500
cas2) They certainly run a little hot! I'm looking at the zalman heatpipe &
fan combo as seen on the Sapphire ultimates, has anyone used one on a
9800xt? Any major difference? My other consideration is removing the stock
cooling and refitting it using Arctic Silver which I have quite a bit of
left over. The case is well cooled with 2 x 92mm blow holes at the top, a
92mm vantec tornado at the front bottom, two standard fans cooling my 3 hard
drives and twin fans in my enermax 550 watt PSU, therefore case venting is
certainly not an issue (Chieftech Scorpio full tower)

Is that why the computer hovers over your desk ?

lol... That's a good one. Always wondered what all those venting fans are for
when I see that.

Dion could start a brand new business. As you may know, hovercraft
ply the English Channel carrying paying passengers (and vehicles too).

How about daily Channel computer flights ? And with the fan noise,
the passengers would be right at home. I have been on a hovercraft
across the Channel several times. Man, they are noisy beasts !!

I'm all rheostated up, however, I didn't mention ALL the fans! There's also
2 80mm Vantecs below the PSU! AND there's a Thermalright slk900 on the CPU
with a 92mm Vantec Tornado strapped to it!

On the 9800xt front though, I'm certain the temp sensor on the card is
lying, it's 5:25 am now and I've just woke up, (kebabitis) it's bloody
freezing, the room where the comp is located is at 14.7 degrees C,
immediately after boot I looked at the GFX properties and the overdrive tab
is showing 44C, now that I don't believe! (oh Christ! I'm turning into
Victor bloody Meldrew!)

Alas the SRN 4s have gone the way of the Concorde. Sic transit gloria

Overkill Dion. I have two PC's and they are both setup exactly the same
way - one rear case fan is all I use besides the PSU fan, cpu fan and vid
card fan. My P4 1.8A cpu runs during normal operation at 32c, my P4 2.66 OC
to 3.0ghz runs at 44c (which is normal temp for that cpu), running 3D games
boosts the temp on both about 5-8deg c and both never overheat. The P4 1.8A
uses just stock Intel HSF with an rpm limiter to drop the rpm to 1800, plus
I put a 5v limiter on the 92mm rear case fan and that really drops the rpm,
plus I use a Zalman 400w PSU with a low rpm fan. Needless to say this system
is quiet and cool running. The OC system has a Vantec Aeroflow on the cpu
but again I lower the rpm by using the lowest mb setting to drop the rpm, it
is noisier than the 1.8A system though. The OC system has a 9800pro and the
1.8A system has a GF4 Ti4200. I hate noisy computers and like my setup
pretty much because they are fairly quiet and run cool enough. I ran my 1.8A
system for a bit with no case fan at all and it was fine but I put one in
just to play it safe. One rear fan will draw enough air through the front
vents over the mb so I'm not a big believer in that a front fan is really
necessary. Plus a front fan also sucks in dust. I guess it really depends on
how well ventilated your case is and how much you OC by.

Damn, your system must sound like an airport when you turn it on. I remember
when I had a tornado 92mm in the front bottom. When I shut my system down at a
LAN party everyone noticed.

Not really, I've got a sunbeam rheostat panel in a front bay which I route
to all my fans, I do a lot of playing with overclocking. My claim to fame
being I was number one in the PCExtreme magazine overclockers chart with a
3dMark of around 17500 about a year ago. Sadly I'm not even listed now as
the 'pros' have moved in with their promethius systems etc.
