9800 Pro: popped off the heatsink, TIM looks like crap!

I just popped off the heatsink on my 9800 Pro (unlike the 9500 Pro's the
heatsink isn't attached w/frag tape). The thermal paste was dried out and
couldn't be easily spread. It was more like the consistency of peanut butter.
ATI isn't using shin-etsu TIM on its 9800 Pro's is it? I removed it and used
Arctic Silver III instead.

Argh... I'm wondering just how well the sink is mounted on my ATI built
9600XT.

Is the sink really that easy to pop off and reinstall? I'd like to see if
the shim (if it's even there) is causing a large gap between the sink and
the core. If it is, how hard is it to remove the shim?

*sigh*

I wish my 9500pro was using tape. It had a large yellow glob of gummy crap.

The shim, if there, does leave a large gap. I applied Artic Silver to the
GPU, and layed the future Vantec Iceberg 4 on top, it never even touched the
surface with the shim in place. Had to "work" that stupid shim off, with a
razor blade (slowly working the corners - VERY carefully).

If the shim is that much trouble to remove I think I'd be inclined to add a
small plate between the core and heatsink to fill the gap instead.

The shim comes off in about 2 seconds with a razor blade.

Zip zip done.

Yes there is a shim and yes the heatsink was that easy to remove (on my
Sapphire 9800 Pro).

I thought the gummy crap on my 9500 Pro was frag tape? What is it then?

The dual spring loaded clips on a video cooler, arent much of a threat to
the GPU core, ATI is just paranoid.
