I just upped my RAM today to 1 Gb and FarCry is finally acceptable on my
XP3000 w/ 9800 Pro.
That's my opinion, but you'll definitely want more RAM.

256mb system ram will stutter like you're convulsing. I upgraded from 512 to
1G to stop the stuttering, although i use mostly high settings and low
aa/af. Make surte you shut down all prgrams including services unneeded, do
a google on blackviper or viperslair, something like that for a guide to
shutting down services. Also use a jpeg for wallpaper, big bitmaps use
aropund a mb.

I played FarCry on 256 MB, with a GF4 MX.
I found that it played quite fine (it was a consistent 24 fps), after I
stopped and disabled alot of services.

Actually, Mike, I find it's jpegs that use more memory, because they
have to be decompressed every time they're refreshed. It simply takes
less space on your hard drive. I use .BMPs sized to the desktop (also
means that memory is not used resizing the image) and in as low a
colour depth as will look Ok. I use a lot of old B&W photos for my
desktop: despite the fact that I like to use 1600 x 1200 resolution at
32 bit colour setting, that still leaves the desktop nice and
responsive - not a particularly fast machine, either.

Same here.
I'm upgrading to a 9800 pro and adding 512mb this week so will see how much
more difference that makes

Using a .jpg for wallpaper, or any other compressed image format for that
matter, will not save you any system memory. The only place you'll save
space is on the hard-drive. The image must be decompressed before the pixels
can be placed on the screen. The image in uncompressed format is what
ultimately will reside in system memory, regardless of it's source state.

I, are you upgrading your memory from 256 megs or 512mb
And what's the frequency of your ddr

with all settings on medium Far Cry will still use 300+ mb of RAM - add your
OS on top and you can see you'll get
a lot of disk access. 512mb is what you need to play this
game reasonably and if you add more RAM you'll be able to turn the settings
up and really enjoy your new card. if youre really stuck for cash a better
upgrade would be a 9600pro or XT and put the remaining cash
into extra RAM.

My mistake, sorry, I was just getting at not using high res family pics like
I do for wallpaper. ragetweak3d (or something like that, available at
rage3d.com) will actually clear wallpaper when certian games are launched if
you set it to, with 256mb every little bit will help.

Sounds useful if you're limited for RAM, Mike.

NO, this game needs 1 gig sorry.

Very good stuff. I've used his site before. Written in easy to follow
language, and he uses plenty of common sense :)
McG.

I disagree. I followed his instructions for a 'server' machine and my
network stopped working. So just a warning that not all his settings
are correct. I proved that to myself a couple of times.

512mb is fine from what a buddy says, as long as you dont use aa, af or go
above medium settings.

Even then it stutters a bit. You miss out on what makes this game so
amazing if you let yourself play at just medium settings.
I had a 9800 Pro, AthlonXP @ 2200 MHz, and 512 Mb of RAM and was playing
FarCry at "Medium" settings. I was upset with the jerky feel of it and
though the game looked OK, I thought, "what's the big effin' deal with
this that everyone's talking about?"
Got 512 Mb more memory last weekend, upped the settings and I've been
totally blown away. It runs like a dream now too.
