98 to xp upgrade on sony vaio

trying to upgrade win98 to xp home on sony vaio pcgf180
and get fatal exception 06 at location 0028:00000017. Any
ideas??

Don't do it? I would suggest that if you are running Win98 on a machine,
that machine was designed for Win98 not WinXP. You will likely be better off
reformating and reloading Win98.
 
Sony may have installed proprietary software on the laptop, check with them
for any compatibility issues with upgrading to XP.
