9700pro to 9800

Hi
I just got a 9700pro and I very happy. It a major improvement after having
to deal with a geforce fx
5200. Now, I heard that there is a way to mod this card
into a 9800 just like 9500 to 9700, without the big preformance improvement.
Now, i run most of my games
at 1024x768x32,4xaa,16xanisotropic.
Would I gain anything my going trough with this mod?
If so, where can I get the hacked drivers/fixes neccesary?
Thanks a bunch
John

You can not mod it to a 9800. These cards are not the same like the 9500 and
9700.
It's easy to mod a 9500 to a 9700 and a 9700 to a 9700 pro.
Otherwise, some opts for the 9800 work on the 9700 as well, but not all.
Anyway, you can try the omega drivers for that (they didn't work for me at
all).
9700 pro is a fine card though.

I'm using the Omega drivers now, and my 3DMark2003 score is 5850. With the
Cat 3.5 drivers my score was about 60 points higher with the same setup.
The difference is negligible as far a speed is concerned. With the Omega
drivers, I do find that some lighting and effects are different, mostly
brighter. Game play is easier with the Omega drivers, but if you like a
"darker" mood, maybe the Cat 3.5 is best.

Goto www.omegacorner.com (scroll down for ATI) and read up on the
tweaked drivers he provides. Just un-install the ati control panel and
then install his drivers. You will be given an choice to use the 9700
to 9800 hack when you start the install. More importantaly, these
drivers improve on the image quality of games.

I am a bit wary of these drivers as they seem to do a lot more than
conventional drivers, can they be fully uninstalled if I try and don't
like them?

Of course. I'm using 3.4 and the Omega version that goes with it. I've
yet to upgrade to CAT 3.5 (*and his Omega version) since I don't see
any reason to. The fixes that 3.5 did don't effect me, and some of the
'issues' could effect my GTA:VC install. The 3.4's are running super
good right now. The Omega "pack" of drivers does come with a lot of
extra stuff, but those don't run unless you actually use them. The
pull out window in program files lists them there. Honestly the
included 3rd party utilities are pretty handy. There is a artifact
tester, 60mhz refresh fix etc..

Just make a restore point manually in XP and give it a go. You can't
damage anything that a reinstall of video drivers can't fix.

Thanks for that. I did try it on a test install of XP on another
partition and they work fine, including GTA:VC, but there was no
advantage in the 3dMark2003 scores over ATI's 3.5 drivers, and I
couldn't pass the Pepsi challenge on any visual quality improvements
so I will stick to the ATI drivers on my main installation.

They aren't really designed for 3dmark2003 improvements. In fact I've
read that they are a little slower. The benefit is a better visual
quality with most games. Not sure you noticed in GTA:VC but the
motorcycles and cars show blood trails if you run someone over with
the Omegas and without.. no blood. UT2k looks better then ever with
them as well. At least you tried them for yourself.
No, the blood trails work just fine in GTA:VC with Catalyst 3.5.

UT2K could look like Kylie Minogue, but until it it is totally
rewritten to have some idea or balanced and fun gameplay I am not
going near it :)
