9600 Pro woes...

OK, I'm about to pull my hair out...

Getting (seemingly) random lockups with a new ATI 9600 Pro that I just
installed into my system. Before recently, the system was rock solid. And
it still seems to function that way until I jump into a game/other software
that utilizes DirectX. Then at some random point during the game, it'll
just lock up solid. (No CTRL-ALT-DEL, etc...)

Here's the specs of the comp...

Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP (Can't find the number right off hand...) Runs at 1.25GHz.
(Un-overclocked.)
KT3 Ultra 2
1 Gig RAM
Using the on-board sound.

Was previously using the GeForce4 Ti-4200.

A few things...

1.) I know it isn't heat. Had the case off to check this first thing.
(Last time I encountered anything like this, it was with a Ti-500 when the
cooling fan went...) There's no discernable heat whatsoever.
2.) Have the latest drivers/BIOS updates/etc. For everything.
3.) Even went so far as to completely uninstall the NVidia drivers and etc.

Anyone have any ideas whatsoever of anything else to try short of chucking
this card out a window?

Try

which lists the most common causes. Personally, on my setup, I found that
having the AGP speed set to x8 caused the problem you described. I backed
it to x4 and it's now solid as can be with virtually no performance loss
(according to 3dMark03). The main causes seem to be AGP x8, incorrect
voltages and overheating.
