939 motherboards without fans

Keith S.

I'm looking to build a high performance, but quiet PC.

Are there any socket 939 motherboards, with PCI-E video slot (not AGP) that
are only passively cooled chipsets.

I've read that the active cooling mobo chipset fans on some boards are loud.

Thanks for your replies in advance!

If your not looking for a real "tweeker" type board you might look at
the MSI-480m2-IL

I have seen some good comments about it.

Abit AV8

Thanks for the reply.

The Abit AV8 is an AGP board, not a PCI-E board.

I'm trying to get a cool 'n quiet enabled PCI-E Athlon 64 socket 939 board
without active cooling on the mob.

Then buy the board that has the features you want and remove the chipset
cooler and replace it with a passive cooler. It's just that simple.

Thansk -I thought of that.

I was worried that some motherboards use actice cooling because passive
cooling wouldn't be adequate (I'm thinking SLI motherboards here)

That's why I started tinking 890 chipsets mobos -what do you think?

Remember: take off the factory cooling from your Mainboard and you have NO
warranty.

Has anyone tried passively cooling an overclocked nforce 3 or 4? Maybe the
overclocking doesn't affect the chip?

Most chipset coolers don't remove much heat with the little 5cfm fan
anyway. Adapt a HS that is 3-4 times larger in mass than the original and
use a low speed fan that is silent and the cooling will be better than the
original.

I've read that the fan on the Asus SLI nForce4 board goes up to 8000 rpm and
gets quite loud.

Chaintech VNF4/Ultra...
... at least, the picture on NewEgg doesn't show a fan.

Whoops, never mind.

I read in the reviews that Chaintech's latest revision of the board
includes a fan, and that they're sending fans to people who bought older
versions of the board.

Blech. One more whiny fan to seize up and die after eight months.
Maybe I won't get an NForce4 board after all.
