7300le and Aero Question.

I have a Gateway GM5260 with core2duo 6300 and 4 gigs ram. It come with the
7300le video card. I'm running the 22 inch gateway monitor and a 19"
viewsonic in dual monitor. The aero effects are jumpy, especially flip 3d
and minimize\maximize windows. Media Center drops a lot of frames as well
in tv mode. Am I overtaxing the 7300le card that comes with it? Would
upgrading to a beefier video card solve this issue. Any thoughts would be
appreciated?

Thanks,

Have you ever been back to the manufacturer's website to see if they are
offering any updated drivers. Even if brand new that should be the first
port of call since while the new hardware was packed a number of things
could have been fixed / improved etc.

Also check what they installed for updates, a lot of OEM installed stuff
can be problematic.

Until an OS is properly released manufacturers use drivers that are
intended to be worked on and improved but "Get you up and running" so to
speak and it sounds like maybe that is partly responsible. In this case
particularly check for drivers for video on the card makers site but
check back before installing anything you are not sure about.

you may be lucky and find someone with exactly the same setup and an
instant answer but unless that happens you need to check for updates for
all hardware. I am assuming this is a problem that has always been there
and not something that just started.

Charlie is correct in advising that you check for newer/better drivers, but
many have reported problems with the driver updates supplied for NVIDIA
video cards through Windows Update. You're better off downloading the latest
drivers from NVIDIA for your OS and card:

That said, the 7300 LE is pretty much the low end of the 7000 series. Prices
as low as $29 at NewEgg. There appear to be many "flavors" of 7300 LE cards
sporting different amounts/speeds of on-board video memory, etc., so it's
hard to say if the card itself is deficient. If updating drivers doesn't
result in a performance improvement, it's time to consider a new video card.
If you decide on a new card, consider the 8000 series, as it supports
DirectX 10 and newer shader models, thus will last longer before becoming
obsolete. Treat yourself to a midrange 8600 card (starting at ~$105 at
NewEgg) with at least 256 Meg *on-board* memory.

I think those two (big) monitors are a bit too much for the "poor" 7300LE. I
would recommend a new VGA card (at least an X1950 PRO).
If you don't use DirectX 10 games you shouldn't buy a mid range DirectX10
card because their performance is not good. A high end DirectX 10 card is
too expensive. So a DirectX 9 card would do...

Yes that's right, I forgot that. One Nvidia driver also threw me for a
few minutes, was using dual monitors and it installs them separately so
when you "Think" the machine has finished it really hasn't. Not sure but
I think they may have changed that now. Ya need to read the instructions
carefully, which of course I didn't the first time around.
