60x60mm cpu fan on Pentium III slot 1 ?

Hello,

Is it possible to mount a 60x60 mm cpu fan on a Pentium III 450 mhz slot 1
processor ???

The original fan was a 50x50 mm cpu fan.

I am not sure if a 60x60mm cpu fan will fit ???

Bye,
Skybuck.

Hello Peeps,

Here is the full story ;)

My PC started making a bad sound *again* so I decided to clean the
fans.

Normally I only clean the power fan of the power box... but this time I
dediced to clean the cpu fan as well... I didn't clean the cpu fan for
over 7 years... so there was a lot of dust inside the cpu heatsink and
on the little fan itself.

I can vaguely remember seeing cpu temperatures of 70 degrees with the
default cooling solution and this fan and all the dust etc... so that's
not good... but it's been long again so I took a look at temperaturesso
I am not sure.. .it might have been 60 degrees or 50 I am just not
sure... all I remember is that it was kinda high...

Well I cleaned and oiled the power fan before so that was no problem.

But the cpu fan was a problem... there was a little washer on the back
of the sleeve... I decided to leave it on... because it might help keep
the fan stable...

So I pulled the fan off with great force... The first time I
succeeded... so I cleaned it and let it dry and then I oiled it... I
did the same with the power fan... however it had it's washer already
removed a long time ago.

I was happy with the big fan it spinned smooth again... after 1 big
drop of oil.

However I wasn't so happy with the little fan... I still thought it
spinned a bit noisy when I gave it a little spin... so I thought
"hmmm... maybe that tiny little drop of oil wasn't enough".

So I decided to pull off the fan again which took great force... and
this time I actually broke off a fan blade... oh-oh... that's not
good... well I oiled it ofcourse and then placed it back with one fan
missing... (there were 5 in total).

And then the fan made a horrible noise.... so I had to remove it...
so I simply detached the fan from the cooling box/heatsink.

The noise was now acceptable again... I started wondering if the little
fan was the cause of all the noise after all... not sure though... and
I'll never know for sure... it's hard to tell which fan is causing the
noise when there are two or more ;)

Anyway... the next two days... I ran my PC without a cooling fan. I
used the software called "motherboard monitor" (MBM5) to measure and
follow the temperatures...

While simply running windows and doing small tasks...the temperature
was about 40 to 50 degrees.

Then when playing games the temperature would rise to 80 degrees and
get close to 90 degrees and sometimes even slighty over 90 degrees.

I can even remember seeing a 101 degrees back when I overclocked the
system to 600 mhz or so... but then it crashed etc and the
processor/system even shutdown and came only back after it cooled down
a bit ;) that was a bit scary ;)

I also set an alarm at 90 degrees this time... while testing and
playing same games... the alarm would be hit pretty fast though ;)

So after two days of not being able to play any games decently and
putting my processor at risk I decided that it was still worth fixing
the problem and making sure my pc would last for some more years to
come so I can use it to test some stuff with other computers and
ofcourse my soon to be new dream pc ;) see other threads about that ;).

Anyway... the intel pentium III 450 mhz is able to run at 90 degrees
maximum according to the specifications... but 50 degrees is probably a
normal acceptable level.

Well to make a long story short... I went to the store... they had a
50x50 millimeter fan but it didn't fit well and they didn't have the
right screws... they didn't have any screws to mount it... and the old
screws were to short... so that was impossible.

Also the 60x60 millimeter fan was way too big and pretty impossible to
mount.

So then the guy offered to replace the entire heatsink and fan with a
new model.

Yep ladies and gentlemen ! ;) :):):) =D

I am now the happy owner of a brand new "Majesty II" (TTC-M2AB) by the
same manufacturer of the original crappy fan which I completely broke
into pieces... I was kinda amazed how easy it was to completely destroy
the old fan... even the frame snapped into 4 pieces. The manufacturers
name ?: Titan ! ;)

Yup ladies and gentlemen... I know too have a golden orb in my computer
! ;)

And I must tell you... I-LOVE-IT.

The temperature right now... and also after boot time is (hold your
breath for a moment)

26 Degrees ladies and gentlemen ?!?!?!?!!!!

And guess what ladies and gentlemen ?!?!?!?!!

I actually overclocked my pentium III 450 mhz to 600 mhz.

Easy as pie... thanks to the asus p3v4x motherboard which simply does
it for me automatically... I only had to select the 600 mhz option...
how easy is that ?! ;)

I am fricking amazed that my pc is still running while I type this...
the last time I tried running at 600 mhz it simply crashed and hang and
etc... as described above.

I actually have one memory chip of 100 mhz and one memory chip of 133
mhz...

So I am a little bit amazed that my pc is actually working at the
moment ???

Because the overclock settings says something like:

system/pc 133 / 133.6

or something like that...

So too me the setting seems impossible... because to me it seems
related to the memory speed ? but maybe I am wrong about that ? I think
the memory speed should be 100 mhz...

But maybe it works because:

1. I am wrong about this
or
2. The orb is actually blowing cool air over the memory chips as well
?!?! making it work ;)

I have no idea...

Well euhm... I have only one last thing to say about all this... I
played some quake 3... and the temperature rises to about 41 degrees
which to me seems more than acceptable...

I will put an alarm at 50 and even 55 degrees or so... and if it ever
reaches it... I will simply lower the mhz etc...

Yup...

The Majesty II.... yes your Majesty ! has also a ball bearing fan... so
I probably can't clean it ;) but it shouldn't be necessary for a
while... actually I mean oiling it... hmmm it's kinda old... hopefull
the oil hasn't dried up while it was lieing in the story all these
years ;)

The only thing which I am a little bit worried about is the dust
gathering... because I think the dust seriously impacts the cooling
ability of the whole thing...

The more dust is in it the worse it cools... and if my memory is not
mistaking this could be as much 10 or even 20 degrees or maybe even
more...

So dust is definetly a risk and so I will have to check the
temperatures each month or each 3 months or so... just in case ;)

If anything bad happens I will report back to this thread... otherwise
I will still be happily running at 600 mhz...

I hope I can now play battlefield 2 demo a littttttttle bit more
smoothy...

Actually I can already run it smoother than some high end processors
which have little memory hehe...

My geforce fx5200 has 128 MB... I made a mistake once and posted it had
256 MB but that's not true... it only has 128 MB to my disappointment
when I found out lol hihihi.

But I have set the aperture size to as high as possible in the bios and
ever since I did that battlefield runs a lot more smoothly... so I just
wanted to mention this usefull tip for people that might and up reading
this.. Aperture size will make the system use system ram as extra video
ram... so if you low on video ram this setting will help reduce
battlefield from having to constantly read textures from the harddisk
and send it to the graphics cards... I am absolutely convinced that it
works/helps ;)

Ofcourse in let's say 2 or 3 months I will be hopefully running my new
dream pc and then all this stuff can go **** itself LOLOLOLOL. Yes yes
yes... I am just waiting for a nice juicy geforce 7900 or something
better for a big lcd 1920x1200 screeny
jummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Btw the gtx 7800 512 mb is still not available in the dutch country of
netherland wooow man what's up with that.

Anyway that's why I want a bigggggg video card... really big
motherfucker with loooott's of
RRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
jummy.

So that it can store all those motha ****ing textures ;)

And ofcourse extra processing power... jummmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I was actually thinking about replacing the opengl dll or the directx
dll with a secret/dirty little opengl version of myself which would
simply replace all the textures and calls with just bullshit/flat
polygons... so that it would run hopefully a lot faster... because
frankly I dont really care about all those high graphics... I just play
those games for the fun of it, the gameplay and the spppeeeeedddddddd.

But but but but... I got some bucccckkkssss and I just wanna experience
the 60 fps or 70 fps experience at insane high details... jummy
loooooking goood ;)

And later in the future when those ****ing ****ed up no good ****
brains games become slow again lol I can always tune everything
baaack...

Bzzzzzzttttttttttzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz now you can go to sleep
did I bore you ? or did you jump up and down of joy.

Well whatever... may the joooyyy be with you ! ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

P.S.: I can't believe how good this new golden shit cools
wieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
GOLDEN ORB !!!! YEAH FOR GOLDEN ORB LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

SUDDENLY I JUST LOVVVVVVEeeeeeeeeee GOLDEN ORBS no matter how dumb it
looked on the screenshots... Yes I can remember seeing this shit some
years ago...

Which motherfucker would want to have such a ****ing nerdy golden piece
of shit in his PC...

Well I ended up with just such a thing... they didn't have anything
else.... gje..
Lucky me eh ;)
WieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeewwiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee.

Yes, big whoopie,,, no seriously,,, this is truely a big whoopie.
WHOEPIE.

Oh wait one more thing... let's calculate the performance improvement I
love that:

((Current-Previous)/Previous) * 100% = performance gain.

(600 mhz - 450 mhz / 450 mhz ) * 100 = 33.3% performance gain for just
14.95 bucks... well actually I payed 7 bucks for the artic silver 5....
holyshit ! ;) well I requested it... because it's populair... and I can
reuse it toooooooooooo. But it probably wasn't needed... well actually
it was kinda... the golden orb did have smut on it... the white
stuff... but I touched it with my fingers... so I thought I better
replace it and do it gooooood... but I checked most of the stuff gets
pushed out... maybe I applied waaayyy too much but I dont care... it
did get kinda messy... good thing I read about applieing stuff.. watch
out with the transister and shit... dont cause a short circuit ;) you
never know... conductivety is low with this stuff they say but still be
carefull with it ;)

And finally euhm... yeah... the shit is really tight together... the
heatsink and the cpu... actually the old heatsink simply had a silver
sticker instead of paste material... I was kinda suprised at that...
first I thought those ****ers at the story did that 7 years ago... but
I think that's not the case... I think intel did that... for fast mass
production... maybe that was causing high temps as well.. dont know for
sure though... I would have to pull away the sticker and test with the
artic stuff... but I am not gonna do that at this point... because I
dont give a ****ing shit... I am happy with my 26 degrees at the
moment... absolutely and my fricking 600 mhz... god damn... lovely.
beep beep beep beep beep.

Now I truely understand what the overlock hype is all about... just add
some more cooling and coooooooooolness and voila... more megahurts...
jummy. For only a few bucks
hehehehehehehehehheehheheHEHGEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
ARGH ARGH ARGH hahahahahaha.
:p:p:p:p:p:p:pP=DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

Ok this post is becoming waaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
too long.

So I WILL STOP RIGHT NOW, YES I WILL< NOW <<<<!!!

Bye,
Skybuck =D
WwwwwwwwioeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeWIeeeeeeeeeeeee. ;) :):)
hrehehehehehehe JAWWWWWWWWHOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:p*

Hallo Peeps,

Yes it me again Skybuck, reporting back on my simple overclocking
experience.

It's been a while now... like a couple of days or so... or a few weeks
or so...

Anyway... I played some games like quake 3 demo and battlefield 2 demo
and civilization 3 conquest multiplayer... and all played just fine.

The only thing I noticed with battlefield 2 was that the scoreboard
would sometimes not display all players. Battlefield 2 demo also played
better with the extra 150 mhz.

However I also noticed some crashes/exceptions with internet explorer
and some other apps.

I also started playing "Starwars Empire At War full game" and it would
crash after some time with an exception... "Unable to read memory at
blablablabla".

So I must come to the conclusion that one memory module is unstable at
133 mhz... (It's only a 100 mhz memory chip).

I have clocked back the cpu to it's original setting of 450 mhz and now
the game plays just fine.

Maybe I can still overclock the cpu without overclocking the memory
chips.

That's something I'll have to look into sometime ;)

All in all it was an interesting experience.

So be warned overclocking can lead to instable memory ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.
