504 Gateway_TimeOuts - maybe redirect problems?

W

Wayne Melia

I am getting 504 Gateway_TimeOut errors at some (not all) pages;
cbc.ca and www.cityofgp.com are problems.
I don't think the sites are down.
Using IE6 on Windows ME, all updates current, no firewall or anti-virus
active (AVG disabled and ZoneAlarm removed for testing purposes); fresh
anntivirus, spybot, and adaware scans show no problems. No HOSTS file.
No prohibitive settings in IE options: scripting, activeX, etc. all set to
enable or (mostly) prompt. Meta refresh allowed.
Connection is dsl (telus - Cdn ISP) thru Daewoo DW-8000P internal nic. Line
test at dsl reports shows 0 packet loss.

I think(??) it may be a problem with interpretation of redirect(?)

Any help appreciated -- THANK YOU in advance.

Some of my own diagnostic efforts follow with apologies for them making a
long post, but hope it may help somebody help me.
I'm not expert on interpreting this stuff, but it seems to get to a redirect
and stop.

Wayne,
I think the problem is on their end as I couldn't get there either.
(cityofgp.com)
cbc.ca = loads just fine .......

Just a thought ..... make *sure* "Allow MetaRefresh = Enable"
is set in Security [tab] Internet [icon]

Thanks for checking, Mike. Yes MetaRefresh=enable.
If you can load cbc, it's not a site problem there (and a friend in Grande
Prairie on cable) can load it OK.
Another interesting(?) quirk is I can load calgary.cbc.ca , but some
graphics on the top navigation bar that are served from cbc.ca don't
appear - and even that's not totally consistent!
My thought (at the moment) is that cityofgp and I are both "behind" the same
flaky connection in telus's network. Telus is the ISP for both me and
cityofgp, and the local phone company.
Thanks for trying and providing more clues.

GET / HTTP/1.1

Some sites don't allow this type of request.
Try typing the URL name in full.

GET http://www.cityofgp.com/ HTTP/1.1

Also note that that domain name appears to be an alias

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: city.grande-prairie.ab.ca
Address: 205.206.208.16
Aliases: www.cityofgp.com

So depending on your DNS you might have better luck
with the other name.

THANK YOU for trying, Robert, but no joy.

I copied and pasted your "GET" suggestion into the address bar and instead
of 504 Timeout, I got "server cannot be found" -- and when I move my cursor
over the stop button in my browse toolbar, an hourglass that remains
whenever I put cursor over stop button even after clicking stop button.
(i.e. stop button does not function)
I had previously tried unchecking HTTP 1.1 in internet options with no
effect.
I have tried both names(www.cityofgp.com and city.grande-prairie.ab.ca), and
IP address in address bar.

1.
In addition to succesful ping and tracert, the fact that I am getting the
initial response indicates I am establishing communication to the site (or
no??).
And other people can connect to the site so the site is up and apparently
OK.
Therefore it must be a browser or settings (internet or network) problem
at my end.

2.
I can browse other sites, including ones that (legitimately) redirect me.
So it is not a browser or settings problem at my end.
Therefore it must be a site or communication (near their end) problem.
Back to 1.

Do you have any specific syntax instructions for using GET in the address
bar? I got some translation of blank spaces to %20 (I think - can't remember
exactly)

Another note of possible interest is that I can browse to calgary.cbc.ca and
the page comes up (mostly) as it should. On that page is a menu bar across
the top in which some (and inconsistently!) of the graphics which are
indicated by cursor hover to be served from cbc.ca do not appear (red X). On
the left of said menu is a spot called HOME which is a link to cbc.ca.
Clicking on that link gives me 504.

Oh well, I guess....

Maybe I'll try downloading and trying a different browser just to see if it
makes a difference.
But there's another source of detritus in my registry, etc.
Also tempted to uninstall Q824145, and maybe Q823559 to experiment

Thanks again.

....
I copied and pasted your "GET" suggestion into the address bar and instead
of 504 Timeout, I got "server cannot be found"

You would only be able to enter it that way using a program such as telnet
specifying an override to port 80.

How did you manage to enter it the way that you did in the first place?

Have you checked for malware? A hijacking of your search engine
might account for this anomaly especially if you are doing something
non-standard with the UI (such as not using a protocol prefix).

What happens if you *click* on the URL specified by my GET?

Dowloaded Firebird and same issue. Again, I get 504 Gateway_Timeout on these
sites, so it's evidently not an Internet Explorer problem.
Must be a connection issue (?) despite:
my end of connection being apparently OK because I can connect to other
sites, and
their end apparently OK because others can connect to them.

'Been trying to diagnose this for about a month including calls to my ISP
techs; and complete removal, reinstall, and rebuild of both ME and IE6, but
enough already.
".....grant me the grace to accept those things I cannot change....."

Thanks to Mike and Robert for your attention

SOLVED --Q824145
I just removed Q824145 and now the sites I was having problems with (well at
least 2,-- I haven't checked everything)
