A 500W PSU will likely be fine, if its of good quality ;)

What is the make/model of the PSU you have?

OK, I can't find any reviews on your PSU, but thats not the greatest make in the world, and at around £20-£25 retail it doesn't inspire me to be honest.

You need to get out of your head that its all about how many watts PSU's have - its more down to how it can deliver the power in a stable and reliable fashion.

For example, a good quality make 400W PSU is likely to power a system more stably than a generic 600W piece of junk.

The bottom line is, try your current PSU and see how it performs - it won't damage anything, things just won't work properly if it isn't up to the job, or starts to fail - then go get a 500W PSU from a good make such as Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, OCZ etc :thumb:

I can highly recommend the Corsair HX520

Q-Tec PSU's are rubbish.

Consider Tagan, Corsair, Enermax, even Jeantech.

500 watts will probably be ok but you're right on the limit.

The system in my sig wouldn't run correctly with a 480W Tagan PSU, running fine with a Jeantech 700W.

Ok, all you lot sniggering at the back there, I know PC World sell Jeantech, but Google - there's some very favourable tech reviews out there and it's served me fine for quite some months now :)

edit ...

Sorry, without sourcing "information" to backup your bold statement I have no option but to delete it ...

I'm using a 680W Tagan and it's the best power supply I've ever used.

Well designed and nice clean connections plus you only have to use the wires/connectors that you need.

This was a bit of an odd one.

The Monitor wouldn't run in DVI mode, only VGA.

Upgraded PSU and the Monitor worked in DVI mode.

If you feed all the spec below in my sig into one of those PSU estimator site thingies, you'll see 480W isn't enough.

The Tagan 480W is now happily working away in my second machine though, it's a fine PSU.

That is very odd Flopps! :)

That must mean that DVI takes up more power than VGA

One happy Enermax customer here. I know I don't have a spec that is anywhere near 500w, but its a very good quality PSU. Looks quite snazzy as well.

That's nice of you.

My source of " information" comes from buying a Q-Tech PSU from Maplins, then using it to a point where it damaged my motherboard. Then coming on here I got advise from Postill in big red writing to reccomend throwing the PSU in the bin. That is what I did. They are all "facts" not fiction.

Any PSU can cause damage if it fails under the right conditions ... what people are saying here is, that brand name you selected has more failures than some, and as a result, can take any other component of the PC with it.

There are no such thing as "cheap" components in a self-built PC, but compromises are made. ;)
