5.6 Omegas are out

Julian Richards

Just ran 3D Mark 2001 before and after. It seems that once again the
score is lower afterwards.

It has happened to me with so many updates that I have stopped
worrying.

But did the in-game FPS increase?
Or did some problems common in Catalyst 5.6 got fixed?
I've had many problems with Catalyst 5.6 in GTA:SA such as VPU Recover
errors and random blackouts and restarts (not because of the heat or my
PSU) so I'm just looking at fixing those probs,FPS bump isn't really
needed anyway :)

As far as VPU Recover is concerned, the fix is easy: turn it OFF. In fact
that is about the first thing everyone should do after installing a new
driver set. It's more trouble than functional.

I don't have problems with anything, really. HL2 and UT2004 are my
main games and have always been well behaved graphically (Steam seems
to do odd things to my wireless router though, meaning that I need to
reboot it on occasion).

The graphics look good, frame rates are not an issue so I guess that I
am a happy bunny!

I'll install the new Omega's now and see the results! :)
There's always system restore.

Like to hear your opinion. I've missed the last few sets of Omega's
(through idleness really - that and the current drivers work fine).

Yep,me too.The last Omega's I had were the 5.2 ones,I think :)
So far the new set gave me somewhat better GTA:SA fps(but really minor)
and I'll test 3Dmark05 though the program is obsolete if you aren't a OC
freak or a FPS freak :)

Never knowingly overclocked :)

Nowadays I go for stability and picture quality - you dont have to spend a
fortune to get decent enough fps

How do you check framerate on GTA: SA?

Could I have a bigger hint and you tell me how to stop it happening,
please?

Well, let's see ... I used to have a Linksys BEFSR41 with the
latest firmware (about a month ago). I kept getting issues with Steam
connectivity, and in the game console it would state: "Fragmented
packet arrived out of sequence..." or something roughly similar. I
looked through the Linksys firmware notes, and in version 1.45.7 (this
is from memory, so don't quote me) it stated they had fixed an issue
with fragmented packets. This version was about 3 versions older than
what I was using. But, I flashed back to it. Low, and behold, it fixed
the issue. But, there were security fixes and other fixes that I needed
in the newer versions. Linksys support would not accept the possibility
that they had reintroduced a bug to their firmware ... regardless of my
tests. So, I switched to a WRT54G router, and no more problems.

The BEFSR41 is a P.O.S.!!!

I've gone through 3 of them in the past three years (bought 1, 2 RMA's). The
last one died a week ago. Died as in dead done gonner.

In my experience the best firmware they released, that worked well with
steam, was 1.45.6. The later versions f'd everything up (random disconnects
in CS, incomplete port forwards etc..

Since then I've sworn never to buy another linksys product.

I've just switched (by necessity) to the Netgear WGR614v5 and I am
thoroughly, let me stress THOROUGHLY, impressed. It is more feature rich
with a smaller and more aesthetically pleasing physical profile. It also
stands vertically and uses only 1 antenna in contrast to the linksys
equivalent's two antennas.

I've also had many many problems with linksys switches at work. I've
replaced them all with netgear and haven't had a single problem.

My router is an Origo and gives problems with CS: Source. As it is
only with that game and nothing else, I would say that it is the
software at fault not the router. That said, it doesn't help me one
bit.

The issue certainly isn't limited to Linksys routers. My BEFSR41
worked great for 6 years. Check the Origo site for updated firmware
that might address your issue.

Conversely 5.6 is my first use of Omega. I'd rather hoped that it might
resolve a conflict I have between MS-Word and ATI Radeon (Word documents
containing graphics cause Word to freeze - this seems to be a very
common problem rather than just on my system).

It didn't, but I thought I'd leave them installed for a while anyway.

The question I immediately have is ought I cease using ATI Tools
<http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/>? There seems to be some overlap of
functionality triggering a warning from ATI Tools (something about
temporal aliasing).

Cheers,
