Lots of problems with the cat 49 drivers on my system.
Ran ATIs driver remover and then nasty file remover.
Cat console locks up system and other weird problems.

P4 1.7
asus p4b
768 ram
ati radeon 6900xt

Going back down to 4.8 drivers untill they fix newest. 4.8 have been rock
solid.

Same problems here with the Catalyst 4.9 drivers and my X800 Pro. It seems
like the Catalyst 4.9 drivers have problems with some cards that aren't
really traceable, like I mentioned in a previous post. I tried everything
from using various driver cleaner to a fresh format and Windows install, to
no avail. Catalyst 4.9 cause display corruption, crashes whenever I try to
change something in the control panel, missing textures in 3D, games telling
me the card doesn't support several functions etc.. No problem with any
other drivers (including the Catalyst 4.9 Beta Doom 3 hotfix drivers)
whatsoever.

I updated the drivers manually through device manager (without uninstalling
the old drivers) instead of using the executable and everything works fine
now.
I also installed the conrol panel (not control center) that comes with the
drivers afterwards and it continued to work fine.
It almost looks like there is a problem with the installation executable of
some sort, that doesn't install the drivers properly.

You've got memory or power supply problems, nothing to do with ATI
drivers..

Do I have memory problems? I have been running memtest for a day without
problems. Also, I do not experience any crashes, unless I install the
Catalyst 4.9 driver package using the included installation routine. When I
install the drivers and the control panel manually, everything seems to be
fine. With other driver versions it doesn't matter if I use the installer or
not. Also, my power supply is hardly the culprit, otherwise I would expect
problems or even system crashes with taxing games and applications.

I downloaded and installed the 4.9 drivers with the old style control
panel rather than the new one and almost everything has been 100%.
Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour is a little laggy at times, but I had
no install issues and all of my other games that I've tried thus far work.
My card is a built by ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with 128MB, which is now 14
months old.

Went back to 4.8 and 2D is back to normal.
I have an 9600 Pro 256 and the 2D was blurry and had blotches with the 4.9's

Running SP2 ?

If so, back it out ( You did save a System Restore
before installing SP2, didn't you ? ) and try again.......

On a related topic, SP2 is likely to be fatal to some
legacy game titles which have gone past the
patching stage.

Time for a dual-boot configuration again..... yuk !!
