My Sony Vaio desktop has the following error:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
I did find the solution in the newsgroup common errors,
but I only have Sony recovery discs, not XP startup
discs, and not sure what to do. If I recover, do I lose
everything saved on the hard drive? When we insert the
disc the system says it can't find drive "D", but we have
pictures stored on thid drive. Asks to continue without
creating drive "D", is this ok? Do not know the
consequences of all involved. Please help!

The answer to if your Recovery Disk will wipe all information or not
depends on the options provided by the Recovery Disk. Read the manual
or contact Sony tech support. In any case, you should have backups of
important data because even if you can do a "repair install" with the
Sony Recovery Disk, something may go wrong. If you neglected to make
backups of your data, the best thing would be to take the machine to a
good local computer repair shop (not a Best Buy or CompUSA), have them
rescue your data, and then fix your machine.
