I have had several occurences where I use a 3.5 floppy to
save my work on one computer, and when I try to pull the
file from the floppy on another computer, it tells me that
the disk needs to be formatted..... I am using different
versions of Word, but I dont not open new version file
with old version software.

Copy the contents of the floppy to your hard drive and open from there.

Are you switching between different versions of Windows? I've read about an
issue that XP has with preformatted disks or disks formatted using previous
versions of Windows (98/95). It seems XP has added a "media descriptor bit"
to the format of the disk, and if it doesn't find it, it asks you to format
the disk. To get around this, first format the disk under XP, then use the
disk to copy from your other computer to the XP computer.

Let me know if this helps or not.
