2nd Hard Drive-Icon missing

J

I just bought a new PC with Windows XP Home Edition. It
came with a single hard drive and I added a second hard
drive myself. The second hard drive has two partitions.
All is fine and I have been able to ghost my primary hard
drive to one of the partitions on the second drive. I've
backed up data to the second partition.

BUT the icons for the 2 partitions on the second drive
are GENERIC DOCUMENT ICONS not the regular hard drive
icon. When I right click the icon, select
properties/tools/check now.../automatically fix system
errors, this fixes the problem and the correct icon
appears. But as soon as I double click the icon and go
back, the icon returns to the generic document icon.

Does anyone have an idea about what's going on and how to
fix this? I'm afraid it's indicative of a larger problem
and would prefer to correct this since this drive is my
backup strategy.

Thanks

P.S. A possibly related clue - volume letters G and H
seem to be skipped over in my system - i.e. the F
partition (2nd partition on the 2nd drive) is followed by
I the first of 4 memory card readers.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage.

On the following screen, select Disk Management.

Provided the secondary hard drive is correctly identified by the BIOS, it
should now show up on the right hand side of the screen, from where you can
paritition and format it (if required) and assign it a drive letter.

Thanks. But it's already partitioned and formatted. I've done this a
couple times. Any idea why the hard drive icon still fails to appear in My
Computer?
