256meg ECC Reg memory appearing as 512meg?

I have a 256meg piece of OCZ DDR400 ECC Registered memory that, when added
to a PC, causes the PC to report 512meg more memory instead of the expected
256meg. The memory fails Memtest86 badly. Two other sticks of the same stuff
work fine.

Is there anything other than this stick being bad that could cause this?

Thanks!

Does your motherboard accepting ECC RAM?
If the RAM is faulty, you should return it for warranty claim (most RAM
nowadays came with lifetime warranty unless you getting an unknown
brand).

It's a dual Opteron mainboard, so it better accept ECC memory! : )

Tyan's website lists Registered/ECC for all the recommended memory. OCZ is
on the list, but for 512meg pieces and Micron chips. No idea what's on my
OCZ.
