256 color display

i have a small problem! seems my 256 color display ability has taken a walk.
some of the programs i use reguire this to operate. I've trird to reinstall.
but it only comes up with 16 bit / 32bit . any Ideals on this? please .

Why?

16bit or 32bit are better than 256


or is this *very old* software?
