2008 federal payroll withholding tax

Just removing the incorrectly dated posting under this one from the top of
the list in (at least) Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

Hi Rick, I saw your previous posting but did not see the date you referred
to. The only dates I saw were yesterday's date of 1/4/2008.

In Outlook Express (OE) and Windows Mail (WM), the renamed version of OE in
Vista, email messages that are future-dated will hang around at the top (or
bottom depending on sort order) of the message list until that date is
reached (or until a more future-dated message is posted). One can remove
such a future-dated message in OE or WM, by posting a new message with the
identical subject line (not a reply to the message with the Re: removed as I
first did) to the newsgroup. Both OE and WM (I don't know what other
newsreaders do) will make the future-dated message (and any replies to it) a
sub-thread of this newly posted message and thus removing the future-dated
message from the top (or bottom) of the message list. So, that is what I did
and, in my newsreader, the entire original thread with the same subject line
as this message has is now no longer at the top of my message list.

LOL ... Yeah, I guess that would have worked too. Let's just say, then, I
was trying to be nice to everyone else.<g>

By the way, pressing the Delete key does the same thing as Ctrl+D or
Edit/Delete.

Hmm, for me in OE6 at the head of this thread is JLGWhiz's first reply with
subject prefixed 'Re:'
In the next level I see four sub threads, the last two both from Rick each
not prefixed with 'Re'.

Jim - for me, attempting to delete a messages does more harm than good, ie
my dbx gets bigger not smaller, albeit I can no longer view the message.

Things may have changed but the only way I know to fully delete a message is
to create some sort of Rule, eg delete messages older than x days.

Hi Peter,
I have to confess that I have never paid attention to the size of the dbx file.
However, I do regularly compact all Outlook Express folders.
That is supposed to clean up the dross; see...

Really? I was almost positive that the posting trick I used (well, the 2nd
one at least<g>) worked in OE6 as well. As a matter of fact, I am almost
sure I learned it back when I was using OE6 myself.

I'm now reading & posting in Vista's 'Windows Mail', indeed your post is at
the top just as you describe.

Comparing OE & WM on different systems, the actual OP of 10April08 that I
see in WM does not seem to exist at all in my OE. I don't recall having
deleted it but perhaps that's the reason for the oddity.

You've demonstrated an intersting and useful trick!

PS This is slightly odd - I had just put a watch on this thread, your
latest (below) is duely marked but I see Jim has also just posted, his is
not marked in my WM though it is in my OE

Hi Jim,

It's a while ago now but even after deleting old messages & compacting my
dbx would seem to forever grow. I can't find the link now but I recall
reading the only way to truly delete messages was with a 'news rule'. Also,
to save messages to another folder, first search with whatever filter and
move from the search window.

Have just had a quick look at Windows Mail, seems to have changed and
doesn't use dbx's, so I guess more predicatable to manage.

In a trivial FWIW kind of way, looking at thread in Google's 'thread view',
I see it is laid out exactly as I described as it is in my OE. That's to say
the first/top post is a reply from JLGWiz, the actual OP dated 10Apr2008 is
not listed at all, your (Rick) initial response appears as the 6th
(thread-view).
