We've just upgraded to Outlook 2003. I used to be able to type firstname
surname and it would recognise a name from our GAL even though names are
presented surname firstname. Could somebody guide me through what needs to be
done to get this type of name recognition back.

Upgraded from what version?
Where are you typing the search?

Upgraded from Outlook 2000 SP3. I am not typing names, but copying and
pasting a list from Excel into the 'To' box, but it is the same when I type
something. For example, in 2000 I could type John Smith into the To box,
press Ctrl K and John Smith would be recognised even though it was recognised
from the GAL as Smith, John. Outlook 2003 won't recognise John Smith in the
firstname surname format.

Cached Exchange Mode? Then you are looking at the Offline Address Book (OAB)
which does name checking against fewer properties than the GAL. To force
Automatic Name Resolving (ANR) to include the GAL change the following
regkey;

Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Cached
Mode
Value Name: ANR Include Online GAL
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
