2000 Server Rights and Permissions

B

Bryan Walderman

Hello,

This is my first time posting to a Microsoft newsgroup, I hope I am in the
correct one! I am currently an MCSA student and an IT employee at an
accounting firm, and I have a question that I hope someone out there could
answer for me.

Is it possible in 2000 server to prevent a user from moving a folder without
changing any other rights or permissions assigned to them. In our office,
folders often get moved and you could imagine how frustrating it is for both
the workers and the IT department.

There is a file_system newsgroup for Windows 2000 but here goes. A user
needs delete permissions to the folder to move a folder [move is a
read/write/delete operation]. You can use special permissions to allow users
to add files and folders to another folder and allow them to delete files
but not delete folders if that would work. To do that give the group
read/list/execute/write permissions on the top parent folder. Then using
advanced/special permissions add the group again and in the apply onto tab
select "files only" and select the permissions you want to apply to files -
probably all but full control, change permissions, and take ownership which
would be akin to modify. --- Steve

Thanks Steve, to clarify, I want to allow the user to have delete
permissions, however I don't want them to be able to move the folder. Both
myself and my boss don't think this is possible, do you agree?

They have to have delete permissions for the folders in order to move them,
so if you want them to be able to delete folders you can not stop them from
moving folders to any other folder where the have write access. --- Steve

Oh, you kids....

It was the precursor to Explorer. Not as fancy, but you couldn't
accidentally drag a folder into another folder.

I am not exactly a kid - my kids call me a dinosaur. May be if you are going
to Summit you could request that they bring it back in Longhorn. I can't
make it :( I guess someone has to hold down the fort while you folks are
partying. --- Steve

The old Windows 3.1 'File Manager'
IIRC it was still there in Windows NT, not sure about 2K and it's gone in
XP.

and use it on a boot up floppy. --- Steve
