2000 backup utility fails after 5gigs

The backup utility stops after about 5gigs of data and
reports that the fixed media is full when both drives
have adequate room.

They don't if the target drive is FAT32.

You must convert:

convert C: fs:ntfs
convert D: /fs:ntfs
