200 GB HDD Advise Pls

Hi ... I am getting a 200GB hard drive and I was told that windows xp
doesn't recognize the whole 200gb , Is there any truth to this ? It
doesn't make any sense to me as to why it wouldn't but , I would like
to hear from you about this matter ...

One, will the motherboard BIOS support a 200Gb drive? Unless it's a recently
manufactured motherboard the answer may be NO.

Two, if the motherboard won't see the full size of the drive there is no way
Windows will either. Period.

Three, If one is a yes then see KB article 303013 - How to Enable 48-bit
Logical Block Addressing Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows XP
 
Assuming the computer you have meets the technical specs mentioned above,
don't be suprised when you only see a total size of 186.26 GB. Most drive
manufacturers don't actually make 200 GB drives, rather they make
200,000,000,000 BYTE drives. Because the conversion factor to KB then MB
then GB is to divide by 1024, not 1000, the acual size that shows up in GB is
smaller. This is not a defect in the drive, just a little misleading
advertising by drive manufacturers. This may be what you are referring to.
 
Hi ... I am not positive but I believe my motherboard which is ABIT
IC7-MAX3 will support it , This is the type of hard drive I am thinking
of getting Seagate / 200GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / IDE Hard Drive
Can you explain what I need to do with this 48-bit Logical Block
Addressing Support , Or can you provide better instruction as to what
needs to be done ? Any assistance will be most appreciated ....

You will need XP SP1 or higher. Your mother board must also support a hard
drive this size. Check the manufacturer for specs on the mother board, you
may need a bios update.
A 200 gb mother board is not actually 200 gb. The manufactures use 1000 mb
as a gig, but a gig is actually 1024 mb. XP displays the true size, not the
manufacturers size.

Hi ... First off I would like to say to Micheal Steven , Thank you for
your awesome website , It has help me along the ways big time , I even
recommended to others , Thanks MS !!! ... Ok now for the size of the
drive , I understand its not the actual size ( 200gb ) I am just using
that term because that what Seagate makes it out to be , Its cool if it
isn't 200gb , The main thing is you understand what it is I am asking ,
thats what really counts , So thanks to everyone that has assist and I
will post back as to how things work out ...

i installed a 300gig on a system last week and only got 160gb. installed
seatools from seagate in windows and did reboot and
the 300gig was there. will require a re format on the big drive
