$20 to the person who can help w/ win xp pro system restore

System Restore will not go back to any of its restore points, though it shows
that it makes them regularly. I have never tried this on xp pro. I have
many virus scanners and the like running, either realtime or I daily update.
They are: SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Microsoft WinAntiSpyware, AVG,
Ad-Aware SE, Spybot serch and destroy, Yahoo AntiSpy, and Fix It Utilities.
I have had problems with viruses such as DSO Exploit and Purityscan.R but
finally believe they are gone. I did erase my Temps folder contents but
can't see how this would matter. I am not a computer programmer, so I don't
feel comfortable with rewriting code. Also, for another $20 (I am a business
person so feel like this may motivate some answers-I will pay, if it works) I
suddenly can't get aol's aim (instant messenger) video to work properly. My
web camera shows up for me and the other party and my voice is heard by the
other party, but I can't here and see them. Their camera is showing up on
their computer however. I think I have checked all settings and have the
latest version of aim. As I said, this did work before-could it be a result
of my erasing my temp folder?
Thanks, and in desperate need of a fix...

I don't want your $20. This newsgroup provides free technical support,
given by volunteers like me out of the goodness of our various hearts.
If System Restore doesn't work, there is nothing you can do but disable
it, reboot, and enable it again.

I don't think any of the problems you describe can be attributed to
deleting a Temp folder. Since you have had problems with infestation,
some system files may have been damaged. Try running the System File
Checker:

Start>Run sfc /scannow [enter]

You may need your XP cd.

Any difficulties with AIM or your webcam should be taken up with tech
support for those items.

If running the System File Checker doesn't help, take your machine to a
good local professional and give *them* the money to check things out.
That would be a more productive and efficient use of your money and
time.

You have a ton of malware apps but only one anti-virus
listed (AVG) so if you did not keep that program (AVG)
completely current and scan with it, you can easily have a
virus.

System Restore can be corrupted and become non-functional.
It will work best if you are using NTFS file system and you
use the disk cleanup app to periodically remove all but the
latest point.

Programs such as Fix It Utilities can easily be used wildly
and remove registry entries that are valid and needed. Care
must be used with any registry tool.

Can't help with your AOL problem, but do suggest that the
you use the word hear to indicate sound and here to indicate
a place.

To handle virus problems, you must do full system scans of
all files using a current anti-virus program and then have
an anti-virus program that scans all Internet activity,
email, chat, IM, browsing and downloading. There are also
anti-virus tools that stand-alone, such as STINGER and tools
designed to only remove/repair damage from one virus after
you have identified the virus. See www.sarc.com and
http://vil.nai.com/vil/default.asp as well as the AVG pages
for help. You can do on-line anti-virus scans and the PC
Pit Stop site www.pcpitstop.com has some useful tests and
advice.

If you are willing to spend money go to a professional. I do this for a
living. I don't mind volunteering help here but $20.00 is insulting. Anyone
qualified to charge for their services would have a minimum charge of more
than $20.00. Part of the reason they would charge more is because they would
have to spend some time diagnosing what is wrong. From your description
there is not enough information to make a diagnosis I would charge for.

Kerry-
20 bucks may be insulting, but the microsoft tech support-yes even paid is
pathetic as anyone who speaks fluent english can read off of a flow chart
such as they do. I have spent almost 1000 dollars trying to get my web cam
to work, a good chunk of that in the form of tech support. I can tell you
from experience, that there are few people really qualified to fix computer
problems and that windows is a pretty bad os. I have probably got the "best"
pc out there, and it still wants more money from microsoft. The 20 bucks is
what microsoft os crashes cost me per minute. That is not chump change. If
I ran my business the way ms tech and customer support opperate, I would be
out of business.
