2 questions about language packs

I'm on windows XP pro, with a Japanese language pack installed. I've got the
setting on "kanji" to -"no conversion" so when i type it doesn't throw it
into kanji. However... few questions
1. when ever i hit space, to put a space between words it converts what i
just wrote into kanji, however if i hit SHIFT + SPACE it doesn't convert...
also if i'm writing a long sentence, after like the 4th word it converts some
of the first half of the sentence. this is really annoying and i was
wondering if there was a way to turn it completely off. if it is a setting in
word, or rather in the language bar that i have missed.

2. translation feature. for example i put in a word "tabemasu" which means
"to eat" and it pulls up kanji and other junk. for a lot of words it doesn't
have any translation. is there a place i can upgrade this or am i just out of
luck with it?

thank you!

Hi =?Utf-8?B?YSBCIHN0dWRlbnQ=?=,

I'd try asking these questions in the word.international.features newsgroup. The
first sounds very much like AutoCorrect, so you might try turning off everything
under "AutoFormat as you type" as well as AutoCorrect, just to see if it makes a
difference.

I'd also turn off Tools/Language/Set language/Detect language automatically. And
maybe also the auto spell check (Tools/Spelling and Grammar). Those are the
standard features I'm familiar with that trigger in the way you describe.
