xp fails to boot after setup. Maybe every 8th time it
will boot into xp and all is then fine. I can see and use
both drives. This is NOT dual boot. Second hdd is just
for my data and was partitioned during xp installation. I
can boot into safe mode every time, but into std mode
ususally fails and just sometimes after I keep trying I
will get in. Otherwise I get a screen flash
saying "unmountable boot volume", then I can retry or try
safe mode. When I do get in whether std or safe mode,
then I can use both hdds. ms and western digital say this
message maybe caused when upgrading to xp and using 40
wire cable, but no mention of 2 hdd. They both say use 80
wire cable. I tried this and now system boots, but 2nd
hdd is not listed in exployer. Ideas please !!!
THANKS.

Hi Paul,

Dumb question perhaps, but did you rechecke jumper settings? They may be in
conflict. Have you tried putting the drives on separate controllers?

Thanks Rick, yes I did set the jumpers. I only have one
controller to use, unless I want to loose my cr-rom and
cdrw. BTW I tried two different slave drives. I also
tried one of these slaves as master and trid the master
as slave. Same problems. I need to vent now: I have been
working on this for over 48 hours. I have a VB assignment
due next week and whis is why I need to upgrade to xp.
What does xp mean anyway?? eXtra Puke

Sounds like a hardware issue. Try 1) replacing cables; 2) run hard drive
diagnosis (use a utility from the manufacturer) on the hard drive that
gives you problems; 3) if all of that is fine, the controller on the
motherboard may be going.

The hard drives may not be getting along with each other.
Slave the CD-Rom or the CD-RW on the same cable as master hard drive.
Move the other hard drive to the other cable.
Make sure the jumpers are set correctly.

Hi Paul,

I'd agree with Ron here, change the configuration and separate the drives.
BTW, XP is for eXPerience.
