I have a question about installing a 2nd drive on a soon to be new to
me machine. I'm getting a Dell from someone who wants to get rid of it
for whatever reason and he said he can get XP pro on it. All I know is
that is has a gig of ram in it and not sure on HD size...prob 80 gig
but I'm guessing...anyway I know that you can hook up the other drive,
set permissions and drag foles and folders to the master if both OS are
XP home...I wanted to know if you can do the same if XP Pro is on the
master and home s on the slave...after I get everything I need off the
old drive, I'm wiping it and use t for storage, backup and more space.

Yes you can retrieve the files from any version of XP or Win2k
unless of course they are encrypted...

however you may have to take ownership of some folders
if any of the files are in "My Documents"...

so if any of the data is there...it may be easier to just move it to a
seperate folder
before you transfer the drive

The slave may also have to be NTFS.

OK...thanks...do I have to set permissions for the folder/files and if
I do, can I do it before I put the drive in the new machine?

No

maybe just create a folder on the C: drive

then copy or move all the data you want to keep to that folder

that's all there is to it

Thanks...I was thinking I had to set permissions to access the files
before I could transfer them from the slave to the master...at least
that's what I was told when I asked this about XP home on both drives,
but I'm getting pro on the new one. Thanks again.
