I had a standard cd rom drive in one system [AMD Athlon
XO+ 1800(1533MHz), 256 mb ddr ram] with a burner, no
problems ... I upgraded my other system to an AMD athlon
xp+ 2200(1800MHz), 256 mb ddr ram) and moved the cd rom
drive to that along with a new burner. Each drive works
independently when plugged to the system, however, when
both are linked via ide cable, the standard cd rom does
not function and whenever you try to access the drive,
either by inserting a disc or from my computer within
windows, the drive fails and windows explorer crashes.
according to the device manager, there are no conflicts
and both drives are working correctly.

Are both drives connected to the same IDE cable?

IF so are the jumper settings correct. IDE drives have to be set as master
or slave drive.

If they are not connected together on the same cable, is a second device
connected to the CD ROM's cable. If so the same master slave rule applies.

Another place to look would be the BIOS. Check there to see if the system
can see both CD drives.

If all fails, try setting the Secondary IDE channel to PIO mode on the two
drives. This setting is in the device manager and you need a reboot
afterwards.

I assume both your drives are in the secondary channel and jumpers correctly
set for master/slave or cable select.

Yes, both drives are connected to the same cable, and
yes, i have tried all combinations of mas/sla/csel for
both roms. I am not sure what PIO mode is or what it
does, but i will try that also, thank you's both for now.
