1st time designer - security question

After creating my first database and putting it on the network, it only asks
me for my name and password. Everyone else gains immediate access. I
created 2 users and passwords. One user is me which I put in the admin group
and made me the owner of all objects. The other user was put in the users
group with limited permissions. This database is on a Novell network where
access is gained through an app that I created. The app points at the
database containing all my interface objects - forms, querys, etc.

Why does the database ask me for name and password but no one else?

You did not follow the instructions in the security FAQ. You can't take
shortcuts. All you did was secured yourself out of the database. Anyone
else can gain full access because they are using their default SYSTEM.MDW
and signing in as ADMIN. Since you did not follow all the instructions,
ADMIN has full rights.

Go back and follow all the instructions.

If you could enlighten me i would appreciate it. I read a FAQ that seemed to
pertain to my problem ( #40) re:users from other workgroups being able to
access a database that was supposedly secure. I followed the directions in
that faq - it said to log on as an admin user and copy all the objects to a
new database. I did this but it had no effect. I was still able to access
the database from a different computer without a password. Why is this
machine dependent?

It is essential that you follow exactly the steps outlined in the FAQ, or
your database won't be secure. You missed a step. If you do it right, they
won't be able to even open the database unless they use the right workgroup
file.

Try the detailed steps outlined at

I followed the steps on your website, but could not get past #13. I could
not copy most of my objects to the new database - getting a " ...you do not
have rights..." type error. I did notice that after doing the first 13 steps
that my original database has an "unknown" owner for all objects ( I was the
previous owner). Is this why I can't copy objects? Not only can't I copy
objects over, but I can no longer change permissions or anything else keeping
me in a perpetual no-win state. Any suggestions??

What if the backup is gone?

Well, sadly, you may have learned the hard way to always work on copies of
your files when applying user-level security. It is extremely easy to deny
yourself admin permissions.
