Yes if you mean open 1by1, select a folder, highlight (select) a few songs
and have it play just those.
No if you have made a playlist and open the playlist in 1by1.

No it is not easier to use one of those bloat-o-media players.
I think 1by1 will do what you want.
AFAIK what 1by1 wont do is play from a saved playlist which nominates
selected songs. However Settings > Control Tab refers to an Option
to use a cue sheet and also an Auto reload List which may in fact
offer this function.
However 1by1's real strength is how it can repeatedly play file after
file automatically and then start all over again.
For plain good old-fashioned playback (even of selected tracks with
auto play of the next track) then Foobar2000 is a very good choice. http://www.foobar2000.org/
