19" wide screen lcd monitor

I just bought a 19" wide screen monitor (Acer) and wonder if this is going to
cause me grief. The maximum resolution of this unit is 1440 x 900. We have
it set at 1152 x 864 (which is the middle range) and the icons are a viewable
size. If I set it at 1280 x 1024, which seems to be the normal resolution of
monitors that are not wide screen, the icons are too tiny to be viewable.
PROBLEM is that my son was on MSN and a friend of theirs wrote back to ask if
we could make our screen size smaller because they couldn't see anything my
son was writing???? I'm stumped and am now wondering is this is just the
beginning of my problems with this 1440 x 900 wide screen......or whether I
should have stuck with a normal screen??? Your Help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi SusieQ,

I too have recently acquired a 19" LCD monitor. It's not wide screen. The
make is "LG".
I use the following settings and have had no complaints:

Rt. click on "empty" part of desktop | PROPERTIES | SETTINGS | SCREEN
RESOLUTION set at 1280 x 1024 pixels | ADVANCED | GENERAL | dpi SETTING and
choose LARGE SIZE (120dpi) | APPLY | OK.

On re-reading your post, it occurs to me that perhaps it's only the dpi
setting you have to change, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I
will respond.

Good Luck.

I may be all wet, but how can the size or resolution of your screen have
anything to do with how the friend reads stuff on his/her computer?

Old enough . . . .
.... to know I don't really know a thing.

Thanks Andy...I'll try your recommendations. I recently reset to 1024 x 768
and will find out soon (no doubt, from my kids) whether all is well. Are you
happy with your 19" screen?

Hi "old enough"....thanks for replying

That's why I said I was 'stumped' because I couldn't figure out why (either)
that that could be happening (with what my kids friends were reading on their
computer)...and wondered if this was a problem with anyone else! lol I
don't know nutting about nutting so it's great to have some feedback about
this. Thanks!

Yes SusieQ, I'm very happy with the 19" screen. This model (LG Flatron
L1952X) has extra fine Contrast (1400:1), and was not
expensive ($239.99 Canadian).
