Dear MVP,

Please tell us what you think of our problem.

'-- It began recently. (The earliest posting I found was
Nov 19 @ 11:38PM by Chris Scott. My first incident was
Nov 18.)

'-- Our computers slow to a crawl. (Most report the CPU
at upwards of 90% when in the crawl and without any
open/running apps.) Visually, its the slowest of slow
motion, leaving one to wonder if its stopped/dead.

'-- Restart temporarily cures the computer. (Dick
Shrewsbury on Nov 23 @ 1:20PM gets anywhere from a minute
to an hour of computer use before it becomes unusably
slow. I've had 2 incidents: Nov 18 and Nov 21 with
maybe 8 usable hours each.)

'-- Several report having used the latest virus stuff.

'-- Several report having all the latest Windows Updates.

'-- Speculations from the mob:
+ One user, "Hotfixes", speculates that "Hotfixes can
cause XP to freeze" such as KB 824146 (a response to
bryan on Nov 20 at 10:03PM). (I doubt that all of us are
up-to-date, but what if that's it.)

I sense you have the connections to sick the anti-virus
hounds on this one! :)

Thanks for being here.

I used to have a problem where the SYSTEM and one of the SVCHOST tasks
were getting bigger and bigger chunks of CPU time. Using a download of
tasklist.exe (I'm on XP Home), I found that the offending SVCHOST was
attached to the SSDP service. As soon as I disabled the SSDP service, I
returned to normal operation (no issues for many weeks now). I do
have UPnP enabled on my Dlink DI-604 router, and SSDP was talking to it
OK for many months until suddenly SSDP seemed to go haywire. I have all
the XP critical and non-critical updates installed, so I have the fix to
811493 installed. I was not careful enough to link the problem with any
particular thing I did to the computer, so no root cause for SSDP issues
on my machine.

There is also a thread here started by Jason R. Clement on Nov 2, 2003
that found the same fix with dsiabling SSDP. He suggested his issues
were linked to a blaster patch that updated
c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll from 5.1.2600.1106 to 5.1.2600.1217 (no
issues on a machine with .1106, issues with ones with 1217 version). I
have the 1217 version, but don't want to experiment with changing it
back to avoid getting the blaster virus!

Kathy;
I have read many of them.
If you only find them going back the last few days, something is wrong
with your search methods.
These are relatively common symptoms reported here and other groups
with the causes I have mentioned as well as others.
Some have those symptoms, some have other symptoms.
There are many and varied causes.
Since there are many and varied causes, there are at least as many
solutions.

What have you done on the link I provided?
If you suspect virus, perform a virus scan with at least 2 different
unrelated on line anti virus providers, I listed one.

Have you read any of the responses and tried any of the suggestions?

Have you looked at your processes and seen which process is using all of the
CPU?

Listing people that have this one symptom isn't very useful, unless it's
just something that amuses you. A slowdown can be the symptom of many
different problems, so there isn't one simple solution. It could be a piece
of hardware that's failing, it could be viruses, spyware, some program
that's gone bad, an over-active antivirus programs that's decided to scan
every file all the time, a hacker in your system, file indexing or a whole
lot of other things.

Asking for help with no more information than that a lot of people are
having slowdown problems is like calling a doctor and saying, "A lot of
people are slowing down -- they can't walk around the block as fast as they
used to." Without any more information than that, the doc wouldn't know if
these people have bunions, have gotten old, are pregnant, are carrying heavy
packages, have a broken ankle...or maybe just that the sidewalk is being
replaced and they're walking through wet concrete.
