16 bit Windows Subsytem??

Could someone please tell me what a 16 bit subsystem
is?!?!

I recently downloaded a Windows Update for my computer,
and now whenever I try to run certain programs, I get the
following message:

16 bit windows subsystem
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not
suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows
applications.

Could you please tell me what this is, and how I can
rectify the problem.

In XP there is no real DOS.16 bit subsystem helps XP to run DOS program
under XP.

SSG is very correct. It is a virtual DOS environment. Same with NT4.0 and
Win2k.
