1 Gig of ram not registering

D

Dennis Blackwell

Ok, I've got two 512 ram sticks, totaling 1024 of ram and the only thing
my machine is registering is 512 - what do I have to do to get it to
register the other 512.

I have a Pentium III, 800 MHZ
Windows XP home
I don't know what kind Of Motherboard it's using, How can I find out.

Go here, and download the Everest Home Edition (which is free), that tell
everything about your system. After you install it, shoose motherboard in
the list, then motherboard again. When you choose what download, choose the
EXE type:

If this doesn't help, refer to your manual, or call your PC vendor.

Because you are using XP, this has to be a hardware or BIOS setting (or even
a motherboard jumper setting) issue. XP will see all memory reported by the
BIOS, but bad memory will get "locked out" from being used if it is detected
by XP. Try reversing the memory sticks, try substituting them one at a time,
try putting them in a different computer to make sure one or more is not
labeled wrong.

Go into your BIOS and make sure it sees all the memory. While booting,
immediately upon seeing the splash advertisement screen press the ESC key,
look for a rapidly disappearing text about how to get into BIOS. Usually,
it's the F2 or F10 or DEL key you need to press. If the BIOS is password
protected then remove the battery that is on the motherboard, wait 5
minutes, put it back in, now you should be able to get into BIOS (be sure to
set the clock again or some MS updates will not install). If the BIOS
doesn't see the memory then contact the motherboard manufacture - some
not-so-old motheboards can not recognize more than 512 regardless of how
many memory stick slots they have, particularily the lower priced mass
produced models.

One of the most common motherboard chipsets around at the time of the
Piii-800 would be the intel 815 based chipsets. These were pretty good at
what they did but had a few limits, one of which was only supporting 512mb
of memory (well to be fair, at the time this chipset was new, there was
nothing "only" about that amount of memory in a desktop computer).

I have a PentiumIII 800mhz machine (Dell Dimension XPS T800r) and it
only supports 768mb of ram. You need to follow the advice of others
and find out what motherboard you have. It may not support the kind
and amount of ram you are trying to install.

In addition to what the others have said about ensuring that your
motherboard will in fact support more than 512 mb of RAM there is one
other check you should make.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG, go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on the
"Advanced Options" button. In the Advanced Options windows make
certain that the /MAXMEM= checkbox is clear and that there is no enter
in the value box for that line. If you need to change these items
then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit when the changes are
finished. Reboot the computer to put the changes into effect.

Good luck
