Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay trailer

Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay trailer

Rockstar Games have released the first official gameplay video for Red Dead Redemption 2, which is six minutes of pure in-game footage in 4K (check it out at the bottom of the article).

If Rockstar Games were hoping to build anticipation for the October release date, they have certainly achieved their goal. And this is just part one.

Environment
The world shown in the trailer is huge and deeply immersive. Rockstar Games say they aimed to make this world "more interactive and detailed than ever, combining action, story-telling, and gameplay in new ways, as you live, ride, and fight to survive as an outlaw in a notorious gang". The range of different environments is vast, taking you from mountains to swamps to deserts. In your journey you will pass through rural towns surrounded by farmland, and early cities as they begin to establish themselves in the modern world.

Character
You play the game as Arthur Morgan, a senior gun in the Van Der Linde gang, which is the same gang that John Marston was part of in Red Dead Redemption. Every time this gang is forced out of an area they set up a new base camp, which is "where gang members eat, sleep, perform chores, play games, and share stories. These are the people Arthur calls family, and you will get to know each gang member over the course of the game. Helping the camp with food and supplies will help keep morale high, while spending time with other gang members can reveal new secrets, fun things to do, and opportunities for mischief."

The trailer showcases how Arthur can interact with the world, and the range of options allow you to decide what kind of character he is. You can be friendly to people you meet, or you can antagonise them. You can intimidate people, or talk yourself out of trouble. It's up to you who you establish friendships with, and which enemies you create. Ultimately, Arthurs actions have consequences, so it's up to you to decide how you want to play.

The world is populated with a variety of animals which can be either predator or prey. You can hunt animals to either help support your camp, or to earn money to spend at a variety of locations.

Combat and gear
In relation to shooting, fighting, and horse-riding, the trailer gives a brief overview; "Each weapon has unique characteristics with realistic recoil and reload that always keeps the player grounded and connected to the action in a gun fight. In a similar way, the bond with your horse is crucial and changes depending on your treatment of the animal. Some breeds are better suited for certain tasks. Your saddle and saddlebags can store extra weapons, along with supplies and animal carcasses that you pick up while out roaming or hunting. Over time the bond between you and your horse will grow, making them easier to control in tense situations."

As previously mentioned this gameplay video is just part one, and part two will look at missions, activities, enemy gangs, robberies and sharpshooting using the Dead-eye system.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available on 26th October 2018.
