Zonealarm upgrade question ...

B

Bob

I'm running a very old version (3.1.395) of Zonealarm.

I've downloaded 4.5.538.001, but haven't installed it yet.

Do I have to shut down Zonealarm and uninstall the old version
before upgrading?

I've tried to find a definitive answer to this on their
website and through Google, but seem to go around in circles.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

no, just double click the exe file and, if asked, choose 'upgrade' & elect
to keep your settings

the installer itself shuts down ZA and reinitialises once the files are
over-written

Well, I disagree. I just went from v. 2.6 to 4.5.5......and I totally
uninstalled my old ZAPro and installed the new one. I didn't lose any
registration numbers or information......I also chose to decide what I
wanted to allow to access the net.

See the following link for ZA instructions on all that you need to remove.

http://makeashorterlink.com/?P1FD512D7 (ZA link was rather long)

I prefer a clean install......but YMMV.

And you are assuming that he has a pirated version?? Well for your
information, I have a paid for version and I do not update ZA by simply
allowing it to download over my present installation......I just went from
an older version to one that is two back of what he has.......simply because
I always seem to have problems with their latest updates......

So.....that said.....here is the link that gives you the uninstall
instructions and good luck. I prefer to do it this way myself. And the
guys on the security groups for Zone Alarm are the ones that suggested it.
This one is for WindowsME, but the instructions are usually the same.....

Thanks.

I just did exactly the same thing, and just used the 45.538.001 installer
with the old version running, but I did tell it I wanted a clean install.
Works great so far......[FLW] Win98SE, if it matters.

He said " ZONE ALARM " _NOT_ " ZONE ALARM PRO " Sheesh, these DMCA types are
everywhere.

Sorry I didn't mean to cause offence. I just meant that if you have
such an old version of ZoneAlarm (I thought you were talking about the
non-free version) then I was just pointing out that your license might
not be valid for the latest version. I was not saying you had a
pirated version I was just trying to inform you as I have seen many
people buy ZoneAlarm [Pro] many moons ago when it was on a very early
version and then try and upgrade and post hundreds of questions asking
why it says there license is invalid!

OK......sorry I jumped on you. But that was what I thought you were
inferring. Strangely enough, while I have had both the free and pay
versions......I went back to ZA Pro v. 2.6.362 for a year at least. Version
3.xx (both free and pay) gives WinME problems. But one day I decided to hit
Upgrade and was astounded to see that I could download the latest '4'
version.

With most programs, when you take a jump from 2 to 3 or whatever, they
charge you for it. ZAPro does not seem to do so. Mind you, I did have
version 3 on here for some time until it caused problems, so I suppose I
show that version number somewhere in the innards.

Cheers.....Heather

True, I have always installed "over the top" for years, including the latest
ver. 4.5.594.000 :)
