Zone Alarm, new policy or what ?

Les Herrman

Just thought it best to clarify what I said. This occurred on an update, not
on a new install. And apparently everything works if you accept their offer
for a free popup stopper.

Just accept it and then go into the options in ZA and turn it off.

I have ZA Pro and it comes with the pop up stopper. I just turned it
off in the options.

Les,
Thanks a lot for your input on the subject. Had I known that option was
available I would have chosen to do as you said and everything would have
probably worked a lot better. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to
understand the meaning behind the words in computer based instructions.

And to everyone that replied, a big thank you .

When you refuse their offer for the "free "popup stopper , they take
punitive actions. First the firewall is removed from both system tray
and desktop and you have to go hunting for it in order to make it
activate.

I suspect that you just did something wrong. It doesn't work at
all the way you describe. I just upgraded to the new version
yesterday, and no such things happened here.

Greetings All,
First, does anyone know of an easy to use firewall that is free ?
I had the free Zone Alarm, but after accepting its update today and finding
that to refuse their offer of a free popup stopper------It's a long sad
story and not pretty. At any rate I am looking for a new free firewall.
Right now I'm using XPs built in and holding my breath. Also , can anyone
shed any light on this new policy by Zone Alarm. Are they getting out of the
free firewall business, or what?
Why did I not accept their popup stopper ? Two reasons. First I just got the
Google toolbar and it has one of its own and I didn't want any conflicts.
Second , it seemed to me that ZA tried to make it as difficult as possible
on anyone that refused their " kind " offer. I spent about an hour searching
for and unloading all traces of ZA from my system. ( maybe I was
successful ).
Until today I had never had a problem with ZA and it did as advertised. But
not today! So , does anyone know of a good free firewall ?
If you don't like ZA don't use it. There are no free firewalls that
offer everything that suits all people. It is like anti virus software.

Rick,
Another misunderstanding. I really like ZA and have used it without any
problems until this last update. It was probably an error on my part, not
understanding some instruction while downloading the update. Since I
couldn't get the ZA to work properly I posted and you know the rest. As I
said previously , I like ZA and will probably try using it again , as soon
as I sort out this problem.

M

Mad Max

Ken,
I agree totally with your statement. If I did something wrong on a computer
it wouldn't be the first time, or the last. That in itself is an
understatement.
I'm amazed this machine works as good as it does. That too is not due to
anything I have done, but in spite of all I've done. Without the help of the
MVPs and others I would be lost.

Crusty,
It was cold on the moors at dawn. Where were you ?
Come on , give a guy a break. So I made a mistake. Not my first and not my
last. Problem is that I cant figure why ZA disappeared from both my system
tray and desktop, other than that is exactly what the update said would
happen if the offer of the free popup stopper was refused. Funny that noone
else has seen that except me. Did you accept or reject that offer ? Or was
it even offered to you ? Don't want to beat a dead horse, but I'd be
interested in knowing, since you obviously have done it successfully as many
times as you said.

The same is true of all of us. Nobody's perfect.

Of course as usual there are differences in the experience
people have and that was mine. I never could get it to
activate
even
after digging it out . Yours must have worked perfectly and
I'm
happy
for you.

You don't have to buy anything to run ZA Basic (free).
Ijust downloaded and install the latest version. You are
offered the "opportunity" to spend some money but it isn't
necessary.

Just read the directions.

message | Albert,
| I only received this notification late this afternoon.
Hadn't been online
| today ,until then. I was suspicious , and ran Ad-Aware and
AVG and found
| nothing. Since you didn't have that same experience ,
maybe I should get an
| online scan and see if anything turns up. Yours was the
kind of reply I was
| looking for, someone that had the same problem , or
didn't. Only time will
| tell but I'm sure if it is something about ZA , I won't be
the last to
| notice it.
| Like I said, until today Zone Alarm has been fantastic.
Maybe I'll try again
| in a few days and see if I get the same crapola. Anything
is possible.
| Then again, maybe this is a special offer for Okies.

You just clicked on the wrong link, and set me off by ranting about
ZoneAlarm, one of the best firewalls available (in my opinion).

You clicked where there was a check in the box that says "yes, I

page you would have seen a link to "Download Free ZoneAlarm".

That's all!

And now I have to post the page so you can see it!

Crusty,
Didn't mean it to be a rant. Sometimes I get long winded trying to include
all relevant info so there are no misunderstandings as to what I mean.
I know you are correct about ZA being one of the best , free or otherwise.
Also , hope you didn't mind my good natured kidding.
And thanks for the attachment, but no thanks. I don't even open attachments
from my kids.

In the interests of letting you enjoy some of your "kids" attachments :
Do you have a Anti Virus Program installed ?
If so, why not "save to disk" and scan the attachments before opening ?
