Zone Alarm memory leak

Ken Bessler

I had installed the free version of Zone Alarm but vsmon.exe
was eating memory up. It would continue to grow until I
eventually had to reboot. Then it would start all over.

I uninstalled the free verion and bought Zone Alarm Pro. I
still see a memory leak but not as bad as before. Before, I
would have to reboot every 24 hours - now it's 72 hours.

Is there a fix for this? Should I just forget ZA and turn on
XP's ICF? How safe are you with just ICF running?

Hi, Ken. On my system, vsmon.exe runs at 00 except when engaging the enemy.

Open Zone Alarm on your desktop and go to "Overiew"/"Support and Update
Information".

Good luck,

If you dont like Zonealarm (and I used it for some time), then use
Kerio. another free firewall program, but this one seems to have a
smaller memory footprint. I cannot say that I experienced any memory
leaks with Zonealarm, I just changed for something different...

I have been using ZA for a number of years and never had a problem with it.
Have you checked for spyware and run an up-to date virus scan?

The main shortcoming about XP's firewall is, it only blocks incoming
traffic, not outgoing.

Had the same problem as you with ZA, switched to Sygate PE and
everything is fine.

So??? I don't see a problem with that. The important thing
is to block whats trying to come in from the outside, not
whats leaving your network. And if you are running
antivirus why would you want to trouble yourself with
access to the internet from your lan?

Zonealarm and stuff is a little overkill. The important
thing is you want to ensure nobody from the 'outside' can
get into your network. To me, anyhow. I classify Zonealarm
and the other firewall software 'nagware'. And if you
don't have it nagging you it will cause other problems.

I agree that it's the *most* important thing. However it's not
the *only* important thing. You can have rogue
programs--spyware--installed which try to call home. Blocking
them is also a good thing to do.

Nope. ZoneAlarm works very well for me here. It doesn't nag me,
and it causes no problems at all.

Tom,

Your reply seems rather argumentative. My statements are facts. Another
shortcoming with XP's firewall is it is not configurable, i.e., you cannot
allow desirable connection. And, if you are using cable internet service,
you have no choice but to access the internet through a LAN!
